Red Ferrari involved in police chase on Barnett Highway

BURNABY (NEWS1130) - It had all the elements of a movie scene - including a Ferrari. A Port Moody police cruiser was involved in a crash Wednesday afternoon, after what witnesses described as a police chase on the Barnett Highway in Burnaby.

Port Moody Police say an officer on duty saw a red Ferrari turn onto the highway and take off at a very high rate of speed. Police say the car was being driven erratically, weaving in and around other cars, although Constable Bill Kim won't go as far as calling it a chase. Kim says the officer did try to catch up to the Ferrari and that's when the incident took a turn for the worse. "As the officer was attempting to close the distance, from my accounts, he might have hit a patch of road-gravel causing the vehicle to turn, lost control and swerved into a minivan with a single occupant."

Kim says fortunately no one was injured in the crash. They're still looking for the Ferrari and the driver.

It was the officer that crashed into the minivan trying to catch up to the Ferrari.

an officer on duty saw a red Ferrari turn onto the highway and take off at a very high rate of speed - who doesnt do that on a freaken on ramp ur supposed to accelerate, and it is a ferrari so it really does just seem like somebody having a lil fun, driving it like he stole it. i mean i would probably do it all day too if i had a ferrari

Raid3n 04-22-2009 09:32 PM

it wasn't the on ramp onto hwy 1, it was the one coming off hwy 1 onto barnett hwy i believe.

either way.. sounds like the port moody cops need more driver training lol.

The cop never had his car. Granny-shifting. Not double-clutching, like he should.

Ferrari > Police

"Police cars here are only factory tuned. If you can do better than 180K they can't catch you, so they don't even try."

Boostaholic 04-22-2009 10:09 PM

by the time there able to call in the chopper that car is long gone they have to be able to tail the car in order to tell chopper where the car is and that means keeping the car in sight that ford never stood a chance ferrari FTMFW

they do. but it's a shared helicopter program that's shared among all lower mainland police services and it's not up all the time. i believe it flies out of boundary bay... so when it's out of fuel, it has to return there for avgas or whatever it drinks.

wow, and burnaby cops are smart enough to tell our STi "you should have gone for it, i couldn't have caught you anyways".

Dumb cop

I had Air1 Chase me once on #1 hwy for excessive speed. Was pretty funny actually, and yes, I did get caught.

johny 04-22-2009 10:36 PM

they aren't going to call out a helicopter for a speeder... I bet the Ferrari never even know the cop was behind him. he was just driving.

defiantly not a "police chase"

a $10 000 chopper bill to hand out a $150 speeding ticket.

yeah, it's pretty hard to lose AIR ONE once they're locked onto you. They have a FLIR on it too (on both helicopters - AIR TWO as well) so if you decide to bail, they'll track you via your body heat.

they will definitely use AIR ONE to track a speeder if AIR ONE is already in the air. If it's refueling and the cops can keep up with the car at a distance for long enough that AIR ONE can get airborne, then i'm pretty sure they'll use it. $10000 is nothing when compared to the potential lives saved from a horrific crash.
