Audi dropping 3.2-liter V6 from 2010 A3, A4 and TT

Since the 2009 Audi A4's introduction last year, the number of sedans rolling off dealer lots equipped with the company's turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four versus the 3.2-liter V6 has been nine-to-one. With almost 90% of all A4s equipped with the peppy, fuel-efficient and thoroughly entertaining four-pot, Audi has decided to cease offering the V6 on the A4 – along with the A3 and TT – for the 2010 model year.

"We're not backing away from the V6 strategy," Audi's U.S. Corporate Communications head, Bradley Stertz told Autoblog, "We're recalibrating our mix."

According to Stertz, Audi's rejiggered engine strategy has less to do with the slow-sales of the V6 and more to do with the brand's expanding lineup. With Audi's new supercharged V6 making its way to the States in the new S4, along with the introduction of the TT S and A3 TDI, the 3.2-liter's standing in the engine hierarchy was lessened. And with the 2.0-liter mill delivering the best bang-for-the-buck – not to mention placing Audi in the enviable position of being the only German luxury marque offering a four-cylinder in the U.S. – the automaker's new tactic should continue to pay-off on the sales front.

I'm not too surprised. I rode in both the 20009 2.0T A4 and the 3.2 A4 and they felt equally quick. The 2.0T has more torque than the V6 I believe.

There's no reason to buy the V6 unless you want some sort of weird bragging right.

ilvtofu 04-23-2009 05:59 PM

yay that v6 sucks, sounds okay but still not worth it for the performance and fuel consumption increase over the 4

hk20000 04-23-2009 06:02 PM

and the increased maintenance cost. Ask me how I know.

I would imagine that the 4 banger would have higher maintenance costs, considering it has turbo's, therefore more things in the engine that can fail.

ya.. it's kinda weird how the I4 has more torque than the v6..

when someone told me t hat, i thought he was just joking

CanadaGoose 04-24-2009 05:49 AM

Yeah but the V6 sounds soo good

Oh well :(

If you want to have a little fun with the engine you can do a few simple mods that will give you 60-80 more hp with the 2.0T... the VR6 used is the same as the R32's engine i believe (don't quote me) but the upgrade path on that is bit more steep and really... chip the 2.0T and you have VR6 power... The extra money makes it not really worth it... if you wanted a serious power upgrade on the v6 you would have to turbo it... and that is 4-8 grand...

This is all from an enthusiasts perspective... but to say the least I understand it being dropped from the lineup... I am guessing VW will do the same thing ditching the VR6 in the R32 for something else (rumord to me a 2.0T)

the didnt really make the V6 competitive anyways. They made their 4-turbo so good that it renders the V6 innecessary. I dun like the way Audi line-up their cars. The V6 is slightly worse than the 335 while the S4,S5 is slightly better than the 335. Why would ppl get a Audi V6 if they can get a I6-TT. Doesnt makes sense.

The 3.2 definitely sounds better. The only downside to Audi dropping the 3.2 is that now you won't be able to get the TT in manual, since the 2.0T engines, and the TT-S only come in Stronic. I hear they're dropping the manual transmission for the A5 too, which is lame.

S-Tronic is an amazing system and with the HPA transmission remap the system is made even better... (same as DSG)... I am holding just shy of 380 crank HP on my dsg and it drives like a dream and once my tune is updated I should be pushing 400+ whp (and once the upgraded clutchpacks are released the sky is the limit :D)...

A4 the 3.2 is only available in Automatic (not s-tronic) but you can get the 2.0T in manual...

I think the new turbos are (sadly) the way of the future. A smaller engine with a turbo can have the same power as the V6 with much better fuel economy.

...but there is something about the throttle response of a large V6.

I know because I am in a similar situation. V6 = 4 camshafts 4 variable cam thingy 32 valves and 32 valve lash adjusters.

if it isn't significantly faster than the I4 I say this is smart move.

32 valves with 6 cylinders?

how does that work ?

AVS_Racing 04-25-2009 12:16 AM

RS4 4.2 V8 FTMFW!!!!!!!!! god that thing is fast

ilvtofu 04-25-2009 09:31 AM

could they stuff the TT-S engine in the next R32? (well it wouldn't be a 32 then? but w.e)

that is what the rumor is... an .:R20... but of course vw has said nothing about this...

sky52 04-26-2009 12:40 AM

no r20...no scirroco..polo has a really slight chance on this side of the pond ( source from within VW canada).....anyways..the 3.2L is an obsolete engine compare to the new 3.6L in the touareg and passat, less funky stuff in it like variable intake runners, 400cc bigger, better and improved cam adjusting unit..no more smashing valves and pistons.
