Paralyzed back legs

Just yesterday @ around 3 AM, i woke up and walked to the kitchen (where my dog sleeps) i noticed he was limping on one leg, i didn't think much of it assuming he slept on it weird. So in the morning as, I was heading off to school, I see he that both his legs were inactive. He just sat in one spot wimpering. When I came back, he legs were fully paralyzed and he just sat in one spot wimpering and shivering in pain. I took him to the vet, and he checked him out, mentioning he has feeling in his legs, so it must be his backbone or something that was injured. He took an x-ray and for the most part everything was fine. The vet said there is small compression on his spinal cord which could have damaged his nerves making his legs paralyzed. He told me he could use steroid treatment shots but they are not guranteed to work. The chances are 50/50. I took him home, and currently he is sedated in order to take the x-rays.

My dog is a 5 year old, active, Pekingese. He has not had any major health problems in the past. I feel sorry for him, the fact that he sits in a corner and cries and shivers in pain, unable to move.

Has anybody had any experience with this situation? Any advice? Thanks in advance

Yikes... that's terrible... hope the best for you.

Just in the last few days, I notice my chihuahua sometimes limps on one rear leg... but the weird thing is seconds later, she'll be walking on it again like there's nothing wrong.

InvisibleSoul, Chihuahuas are prone to a joint issue called luxating patellas. It's when their joint pops out of the kneecap temporarily, hence the skipping/limping you see. This condition is graded from 1 to 4, with 1 being the least severe. Next time you bring her to see the vet, mention it and have the vet tell you how severe it is.

My Chi has this and hers is grade 1. Nothing is needed to be done at this time except minimize her jumping up and down furniture (basically, avoid putting stress on the joints) and I also give her a glucosamine supplement just in case.

OP, please check your PM.

could it be a peripheral stroke? a friend's dog was paralyzed in one of the hind legs. Vet treated the blockage. Dog now has full mobility except some weakness in that leg

The first vet we saw did not know what was wrong with my dog and suggested a specialist (neurosurgeon) My dad thinks that he had a stroke but we're not sure.

He has almost all these symptons in the link above. I'm thinking it could be Intervertebral Disk Disease.

Wow, thanks for the information... I looked into it a bit, and it does seem like this could be what it is.

Where do you get the glucosamine supplements from? Any pet store?

I'm using CT Support which my holistic vet recommended. In my opinion, there are better joint supplements out there, but my dog has liver disease, so I have to be careful what I give her and some of those other supplements contain things that could be harmful to her.

CT Support is also a multivitamin & mineral supplement as well, so I wouldn't use it if you feed your dog a commercial diet. You could overdo the supplements. I have no issues because I home-cook for my dog.

The supplement we were using before this was Bio-Iso-G or Bio-Iso-G PLUS. You can get it from some vet clinics, not sure which ones carry it. I like a liquid supplement better because it is more bioavailable.

I'm not really a fan of most pet store supplements for various reasons.

Sorry for the thread hijack!

my dog injured his back twice, the 2nd time he was pretty paralyzed. this happened late though, like when he was 13-14. it happeend around august, and well, he lived til christmas.

they used steriod treatment as well. but the 2nd time he injured his back, that really did damage. he still lived a full life. still miss him though.

That is also why, our dog now, when he got up limping on 1 leg, we kinda freaked. It came and gone, and vet said its because he sleeps funny. i hate it every time i compare personalities with Titan (dog now) and Hemingway (my dog that passed away)

all i can say is try taking ur dog to massage therapy and practice some of it on ur dog too. get the circulation going, and hopefully he will regain all his mobility.

If all else fails, you can try getting him/her a dog wheelchair. Good luck with your doggy.

+1 on the glucosimine. One of our rescue dogs was abused badly and we that he had a luxating knee cap, but we got an xray and turns out his pelvis was broken on both sides and one side never healed properly which gave him an arthritis. He limps once in a while but now on glucosimine he rarely limps. Good luck with your dog, I really hope he/she gets better.

my dog, 15 years old now and usually still a spry dog, had a herniated disc a few weeks ago. she'd be sitting or laying down and just trembling. her stomach was very tight and she didn't want to get picked up at all. i thought it was bloat at first so i took her to the vet and x-rays revealed the herniated disc. she got some pain medication and within a few hours, she was back to her normal excited self.

anyway, yeah, it could just be a spinal nerve pinch from a herniated disc. the tight stomach on my girl was her using her stomach muscles to brace against her injured back.

and she didn't learn from this either, she was back to jumping up and off things the next day.
