It looks to be a North American spec thing, I've seen other SLS' with the same pads on the rear. It really doesn't help with the look but I guess safety first lol

yesterday i seen a startling amount of older euro cars driving down oak street. Anyone know if it was an event? Seen an older espirit and an e type jag along with half of the mgb's shipped to canada.

i have an 09 R8 and mine doesn't have those two bumps

It has to do with the 5mph bumper laws that North america has. Something about the bumper support of the car can not take any impact under 5mph, it has to be fully taken by the bumper skin on a straight on impact. It looks fucking awful.
