iPhone 3G wireless speeds suck ! designed this way ??

Would it be to far fetched for me to accuse Apple or Rogers or Fido or whoever of deliberately throttling the iPhone wireless connection, posssssiiiiiblyyyyyy to frustrate customers to turn off wireless, switch to 3G and download a SHITLOAD FASTER !!!

I'm just wondering if the actual phone is designed to do this deliberately.
I'm not talkin out my ass either, internet companies already perform the practice of throttling speeds, especially when they see you're using bit torrent, they just basically kill your connection.

now here's the proof... my wireless connection is flawless and fully tested with my PS3, PSP, and Laptop, I tested downloads and through all 3 of those, they download the same files almost as fast as if they were hardwired.

So now, I've been doing tests with the iPhone 3G for the last few nights now.... here I am connected wirelessly downloading a file at a frustrating 15kb/sec max!
And each time I do this, I swap over to 3G and attempt to download the same file, and voila the shit flies at minimum of 150kb/sec....

now, I'm no genius... but I'm not a dumbass either, and this shit ain't right.

I'm about to start googling this issue like crazy, just wanted to know if any of you out there are seeing the same thing.

forgot to add, that the reason Apple or Rogers would be doing this is to force customers to use 3G more often so they can make more money with people using their MB's.

I would have edited and added this comment to my last post, but I'm using some fcked up flashblocker that blocks all RS images, so I can't see the edit thread pic and link. I uninstalled it too, still nothing.

You know what, I've noticed this too. I thought for some reason that it was my phone, but I guess not. Just last week i remember it downloading in the range of 230kbs, now the average is about 25kbs.

G-spec 05-04-2009 12:01 AM

yea sometimes the wireless downloads work just fine, but it's very very rare for me.... like 1 out of 20 attempts it will download at a regular pace.

when I first got the phone everything worked the way it's supposed too, now my wireless connection sucks bigtime, the phone freezes up very often, it lags worse than my PC....

how long is the warranty on the phone do you know ?

G-spec 05-04-2009 12:03 AM

also forgot to add, my wifes iPhone behaves exactly the same way

03aspec 05-04-2009 12:04 AM

with apple i think its a year, with rogers im not sure.

!Aznboi128 05-04-2009 07:28 AM

um... might be so but i noticed that i download faster on my bold thru wifi then on 3G

hotjoint 05-05-2009 10:07 AM

it depends on what site ur downloading from as well. Sites like 2shared and 4shared give me good speed like 500k, while other sites like appscene only give me around 40k max.

penner2k 05-05-2009 11:30 AM

I dont get how they could throttle your wi-fi speeds..
isnt wi-fi a connection to a wireless router and totally skipping the phone companies network?

If that is correct than I would check the router

To the OP:

What exactly are you downloading? From where? (Your physical location and the site) At what time? How often do you turn your phone off and turn it back on (powercycle?)

Hondaracer 05-05-2009 08:35 PM

yea what exactly are you downloading? are you tethering your phone?

i've got no complaints with my 3G, the speeds are consistantly good enough for surfing, email, etc.

G-spec 05-05-2009 08:45 PM

it's not 3G speeds I'm complaining about, it's the WiFi speeds.

like I said, I've tested it trying to download the same file from the same site using 3G and then WiFi...I've done this from many different sites with many different files....and WiFi fails so fckin hard, usually fastest I can get is about 20kbps, while 3G flies in comparison at about 150kbps most of the time.

And the stuff I download is the typical apps and games via Installous..
And I powercycle or I actually turn my phone off overnight, so everything it's completely off till I wake up in the morning.

and I figure the only way to throttle WiFi speeds is for Apple to have designed the phone that way, which I'm starting to believe, because I don't see how it would be possible otherwise either.

I been Googling and a lot of other people are having the same problem.... smells like a class action lawsuit to me

unless they've put in a wifi chip that is equivalent to a 28.8k modem, I don't think it's feasible at all to say apple/phone company tampered with your iphone to coerce you into getting 3g.

Hondaracer 05-07-2009 08:53 PM

i downloaded monopoly from the app store which is 5.5mb in under like 20 seconds id say over wifi last night?

EXV603 05-08-2009 08:03 AM

ive gotten speeds of 450 kb/s. i guess it depends on the site. however, i find that my 3g speeds are really slow.

albert116 05-08-2009 09:28 AM

Just did a speedtest with the speedtest.net app for my iphone 3g. Got about 4.5 megabits / sec off my wifi connection at home. That's usually the speed i get with my laptop using the same wifi connection.

On my phone, i find that the wifi speed is almost always faster than the 3g speed.

!MiKrofT 05-08-2009 08:31 PM

Seems ok for me. It's slower yes.. but I'm still getting 2300kbps off the iphone wifi.
