Car Suggestion - Fast, Light, Cheap ??

its 3 in the morning cant sleep, just thinking about my next project haha

i need suggestions of cars that are fast, light, cheap ( on a student budget) so price range would probably be from $0-5000 MAX. I would also like insurance to be cheap cuz i dont have roadstar yet.

requirements

Manual only!!
light weight, il probably strip it out
LHD preferred.
and easy to find parts.

i currently have EG6 civic, AE86, or Miata on my mind.

might also want EG9 but then i dont really need the space, and its extra weight. the prob with 86 is its pretty old and hard to find one in decent condition. and the miata looks gay, and i dont know if its easy to tap power out of this car and the availability of parts. but yea the way it looks is the biggest problem.

what other cars are there? and discuss

are you going to swap? If not the miata 1.8L is pretty decent.

If you are, then I'll get the 92-95 civic hatch

From what I've seen, it's easier to add power to Civics and Miatas (lots of turbo or SC kits for these cars) than tofumobiles.

The Miata and AE86 should be more fun to drive.

AW11 MR2

Mustang 5.0 /end thread

I am biased, but Miata. It's not fast, but it definitely feels quick. I notice it's mostly young asian guys, or older white people (both male and female) that drive 'em.

Also if you're looking to seriously add power, Vancouver has one of the leading Miata specialists well-known in Miata circles worldwide, Ocean at Chikara Motorsport.

Insurance for my Miata (commute under 15k) is only $110/month; 23 y/o male.

What about an IROC-Z? I hear those handle pretty well stock as well. Also lots of power.

hk20000 05-04-2009 09:27 AM

!Aznboi128 05-04-2009 11:25 AM

jokes aside mustang/miata is the way to go mustang will handle the power while miata would be great for autox

Blinky 05-04-2009 11:33 AM

Good call guys.

Foxbody 'stang: if you wanna do the strip (mullet not included)
Miata: if you like to drive (leather "costume" not included)

The MR2 suggestion is a cool one as well.

Shun Izaki 05-04-2009 11:58 AM

if you wanna screw around, lots of JDM imports are less than $5k...get a GC8 or something :)

heleu 05-04-2009 12:08 PM

Get a MR2 - looks and handles better than anything else you listed.

shenmecar 05-04-2009 12:31 PM

EG6. =D

BNR32_Coupe 05-04-2009 01:02 PM

Fast (and light), cheap, reliable.

^ Pick two

A 240SX is nice

AVS_Racing 05-04-2009 01:41 PM

hm.. im not a fan of domestics, and i head mr2 head gaskets are a bitch to do cuz the whole engine has to be dropped down. and most jdm cars i see are either shit condition or overprice or suspiciously low priced haha

But near impossible to find a low-mileage one with no rust (esp at strut towers), that hasn't been abused.

I had the same issue and settled on a Corolla GTS. Mainly because of how good the community is around here. Lots of knowledgeable people and parts made locally. Currently running a 1985 GTS Coupe as a track car and it's been a blast. Certainly not the fastest car I've owned but it is the most fun.

I considered the other cars on your list as well but also had the E30 BMW on it. Had one before and remembered how expensive it was to maintain and modify compared to the other cars on the list. Last car I'd think about is an FB RX7. Owned one of these as well. Very fun but not so hot in the reliability dept. Best of luck with your search.

EG was dropped from my list early on due to being FF. It can certainly be fast but I am looking more for fun that pure lap times these days.

I got mine from my co-worker and it's been babied since the day he got it which was way back in 1989.
