| How much discount can you get off a car?
Just want to know what is a REASONABLE discount to get off when buying a new car? I know it really depends on the brand, model etc.
I'm not looking for hardcore rock bottom haggling prices but reasonable, average discount that a normal, somewhat persistent person can get if they kindly ask. Since the economy is bad and cars aren't selling like crazy anymore, I assume theres more power for the buyers?
Say if the car was $25,000 before tax, how much discount can you get off the MRSP? how about 30K , 35K, 40K?

Find out:
Factory Incentives
Car cost Canada
Specific Brand and Model and ask here, because price range is way too broad to figure out the normal discount.

It really depends on the brand and how much the car is. If the car for example is $20,000, don't expect to get a crazy discount. If the car is $40,000 expect to see a pretty good discount. Also it's a buyer’s market so you can walk into any dealership and give them a price and see if they can match it. Another thing you might want to do is check out the forums for the car you’re interested in and see what discounts other buyers have got locally.
For example, I got a 8% discount (was hoping for 10%) and free rubber mats for my 335i coupe a few weeks ago. After looking on the BMW forums it was no secret that BMW Canada was giving up to 8% discounts on all 3 series BMW's so I walked into a few dealerships and gave them the price I was willing to pay. The first one to match my price got my business.

also depends on what car u are trying to buy. if it's a dog that dealers can't unload, there is plenty of room to haggle. if it's something that is not even in stock and is backordered/has a waiting list... good luck

I've been offered at least $10k discounts on the CTS, MKS and MKZ. I wasn't even that serious about buying, just looking at the cars and chatting up the salesperson

depends on a lot of things!
are you buying american? then yes you an probably get up to $70k off list cuz they can't move shit.
trying to buy a new Japanese car? maybe some room.
at the same time, you won't find a dealer ready to budge on a new Genesis.
so it really comes down to what kind of car, which you obviously should have mentioned in the original post! The economy only effects certain brands at this point. and for good reason....

It totally depends on the car.
If it's a leftover from last year's model year, it'll probably have way more discount than something that just arrived on the lot.
More expensive vehicles generally have more markup, but not always.
If the vehicle is already heavily discounted, there might not be any more discount to give.
In my experience, most people don't understand or believe what kind of discounts they are really getting anyways, and at the end of the day it boils down to what they are willing to pay for that particular car, and as long as they feel like they negotiated SOMETHING into the deal, they feel good about it.

I'm thinking of getting a toyota highlander, 4runner or even the rav4, but apparently toyota doesn't lower their prices in the past but that was discontinued two years ago so apparently you can haggle a bit now. . .
damn toyota. . . .

I got around 6k off for a 07 GTI in December 2007. Its possible, but don't expect to demand even $1000 off for an M3 or a 128i
edit: on the other hand - american car dealers will sell you a piece of their soul, just so you can buy their car.

128 = 6-8% off msrp.
I had almost 10g discount for my 08 335i.(cash)
and now I'm even getting 6G off my 09 A4, 3 grand from dealer and 3 grand from factory rebate(cash). BMW is the easiest to bargain compared to MB and Audi
Gotta love the incentives manufactures have right now

I don't understand why people think they get a bigger discount if they pay cash. So many clueless people. Dealerships WANT YOU TO FINANCE. THEY DO NOT WANT YOU TO PAY CASH!
There are often differring Purchase vs Lease incentives, but the actual purchase price of a vehicle will not change based on method of payment.

There are often differring Purchase vs Lease incentives, but the actual purchase price of a vehicle will not change based on method of payment. | You are clueless. When we talk about discounts, there are dealer mark ups and manufacture mark ups.
Dealer mark ups are usually stable and therefore discount will be around the same, they don't care if you finance/lease or cash purchase. At the end of the day, they get the full amount either way.
Manufacture discount is what most people talk about here. I'm not sure if you know, but most leases/finance liability lies with the manufacture's financial group.(BMW Finance for example). To offset the liablity/risk, manufacture will offer a greater discount with cash purchase. -----> Purchase Price WILL CHANGE base on the method of payment.
Manufacture = 335i = 5500 cash, 3500 finance, 2500 lease. That's around what i remember in december. Dealer = 8% off msrp (same thing with everyone)
Manufacture A4 = 3000 cash, 1500 finance, 750 lease. Dealer = 6.5% off msrp
These are all manufacture rebates opposed to dealer rebates.

Sorry, you're right, some manufacturers offer a choice of subvented rate or cash purchase discounts. What I actually meant was "dealer discount %" will not change based on payment method.
People come in and they see the incentives, and then they further try to negotiate dealer markup based on the fact that they are paying cash. Well at that point it really doesn't make a difference to me if you are paying cash or not. And it actually happens most frequently on used cars, which make it even more irrelevant.

it was like 10k off | Is this just happening now? or does the discount apply to the past as well?
cuz I only got like $2500 off my X5 when I bought it years ago.
So, what about discount on the used vehicles??
