From an actual Z06 technician:
Quote:
All Z06's come with a recommendation for fuel with 93 octane. They can also handle E10 (gasoline with up to 10% ethanol added). The ECM is programmed for an ideal stoichiometric A/F ratio using 93 octane. Most OEM programs from the factory run too rich.

Running 91 octane will not hurt the engine. The ECM will pull timing (retard the spark) IF "knock" is sensed and you will loose a small amount of HP depending on how much timing is retarded. This usually will happen with the 91 octane under hard acceleration or at WOT on a very hot day (+90*) and during competition. It may do it under severe stop and go traffic on a hot day but you will not notice it.
Also, as per the factory manual:
Quote:
f your vehicle has the 7.0L V8 engine (VIN Code E), use premium unleaded gasoline with a posted octane rating of 91 or higher. For best performance, use premium unleaded gasoline with a posted octane rating of 93.

For maximum performance, yes... 93 is probably required. But otherwise, it's the same for the GTR as it is for the Z06. 91 works without causing any issues, but the higher you can get, the better performance you'll get.

pretty much all *newer* cars that require 93 octane CAN RUN on 87 with auto-retarding timing.

The important thing to remember here is it will only retard the timing IF the knock sensor senses knock. You could have detonation causing excessive strain within the engine before the knock sensor is tripped.

I got signifigantly worse mileage after filling up with Shell 91 octane in my M3. I only got 310KM/tank with Shell where as with Chevron 94, I got 380KM/tank

I'm gonna have to call you out.

What gas stations are you talking about and how did you test the fuel to determine it wasn't 94 octane?

Octane booster only raises your gas octane like 0.5 of a point. And it costs like $8 a bottle.

It's cheaper just to buy higher octane gas.

I had multiple problems with my R32 GTR before with gas from chevron being 94, I would go petro can and to my surprise I would have no hesitation problems with their 94.

This problem also occured my STI i drive when it was winter, the map I run on it is tuned for 93 or higher, I was geting lots of hesitation at low rpms filling up with chevron 94, with petro though I had the same issue or it was a little less you could say. I did some research and know winter gases can be bad, but then again if you cheap out on the gasoline grade you cheap out.

Anyways all I am saying is 94+booster is the only way I fill up now, I dont trust most gas stations anymore, especially since these gas prices are ridiculous and they will do anything to make more of a profit. Plus it only costs me 20 extra bucks a month if I fill up four times during that month.
