in my experience....its just been tolerance in small doses.

Do what you can do, and do it better the next time around. 3 months ago...i could only run in 5 minute intervals, maybe less. Now i can do a good 20 minutes straight....and still working it to a point like to compare with some of the more physical members here on RS.

Its a great challenge to accomplish.

I guess it's because I used to be a swimmer back then, which greatly helped my breathing. Meh, gonna take some time to get used to it I guess =\

Interval training significantly increases your VO2 max. I stopped riding my bike when I moved to Hong Kong, and for a while was doing a lot of interval training. When I went back for my first summer after 1 year, I rode my bike again and could ride longer at a higher pace than I could when I was riding long distance all the time.

Make sure you are breathing properly to start. You should be inhaling through the nose, exhaling through the mouth. Also, your stomach should be expanding when inhaling. Practicing this will help develop your diaphragm.

Hmm maybe that's my problem.. I don't inhale from my nose at all but rather inhale/exhale from my mouth.

Its a hard thing to change at first. You will feel like you are not getting enough oxygen but stay with it, the results are beneficial.

Increase your VO2 Max and you won't feel like you need to breathe through your mouth

Intervals, like I said before

Warm up for a few minutes
Go all out, literally at 100% of your maximum effort, for 15 seconds
Slow back down to jogging speed for 45 seconds
Repeat for a few minutes.
Add a few 'cycles' every other day.

Your VO2 max will be ripped, and when you go back to slow, boring, useless distance running, you will be able to breathe through your nose without hesitation.
