| What is the amount of your 3rd Party Liability Insurance?
Hey guys,
What do you guys have for your 3rd party liability insurance?
Is it the Basic $200,000 or did you up it to $500k or 1 million or 2 million?
If you didnt stick with the basic, why not? Is there specific reason as to why you think that basic might not be enough? obvious answers not withstanding (read: coz it covers more, etc)
Appreciate any comments, thanks!
p.s: I've searched and didnt find this topic asked abt much, mostly it was "how much is your insurance" thing.

| I'd hit you with an image macro, but it really is a case of Obvious answer is obvious!
Hit someone in an accident.
Someone happens to be a young doctor who, as a result of the accident, no longer has the ability to Practice and indeed requires constant care.
An insurance claim in this case will easily exceed $200k. You will probably want the extra third party liability in this case.

i normally get $2million. for the most part, auto insurance people tell me it's the norm, either 1 or 2 million.. you can go further as well i think.

Those of you at 1 mil coverage, what was the reason you didnt go for 2 mil? didnt want to pay the extra charge? I ask because I normally go 1 mil but I'm trying to find reason or justification to go up 2 mil (max)
Thanks for all the comments guys!

I have 3 million TPL on my vehicle..
The basic required minimum in BC is $200,000, and then its up to $500,000, then 1 million, 2 million, 3 million and then 5 million.
For those who have 43% discount, its usually around $50-80 more from 1-2 million. About $30-50 from 2-3 million.

Unless you plan to run over some kids, I think it's pointless to get anything over 1 Mil.
I don't think I've heard of any stories where any driver with common sense would need more than 1 or 2 million.
A lightpole costs $40,000
A life costs about $250k (random guess)
So technically, with 1 million, you can take out 3.84 cyclists and a pole
The pole is there to make sure they stay down.

The pole is there to make sure they stay down. | Common sense? It's an accident. Not an on purpose. An unforeseeable event.
Liability is not established based on your common sense, driving ability or even your intent or personal wrongdoing.
Suppose your accident occurs because your tire blows out. You check your tires daily but still it happens. You did nothing wrong. Guess what? Liability is assigned to you. Now suppose you have 4 people in a car and you hit that light pole. Oops, over a million. And clearly you're hoping they die so it's quick and easy and doesn't have a chance to escalate further. What if due to your loss of control you unwillingly swerve into another car? Oops, going up again.
My driving record indicates that I'm a good driver. My common sense tells me that I cannot control every variable.

Actually, I did have an accident where my tire blew out in my Civic.
Rear Driver side tire blew out during rush hour on Marine Just before Blenhiem. You could argue "how fast was he going to blow out a tire" but in actuality I was only going about 75 (I think limit is 60 there?) So Yes I was speeding a little.
The sidewall blew up and ate shit while I was going around the bend, and I was Tokyo Drifting into oncomming traffic. With the wet morning weather, I went into a spin and tapped a light pole on the corner (durr. thats how I know the cost) and almost took out some guys mailbox too. I hit the pole, and slowly rolled back out into traffic, and found that the rear drivers side tire came off the rim. I have the video of the aftermath somewhere.
If I were an idiot, I would've tried to keep the slide under control and hit some kids walking to school. But because I had the common sense to stop in the quickest way possible, I aimed for the curb to stop me. One car ownage or send some kids in the air/ hit other cars? Unfortunately for me, there was no curb at that intersection and I aimed for the pole. I wanted to stop before hitting it, but what can you do.
The tire that flew off the rim almost hit some people, but I doubt a flying tire would cause that much damage. It slowly rolled away in shame.

The pole is there to make sure they stay down. | subjective? it would all depend on the lawsuit, if that was happen, I think your case would be the "best or dumbest family" senario. If they sue, wouldn't ICBC be the one taking them on, "on your behalf" so plus the other damages, it can get above say 1million.

2 mil on any normal vehicle. I put 200k on my samurai, but it spent it's life offroad and ICBC doesn't cover shit offroad, so I paid $65/month for insurance so I could get to the trails.
I also want to wipe out a family of cyclists.
