Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks President & General Manager Mike Gillis announced that the Canucks have reduced their pre-season roster by one player today. The Canucks now have 28 players on their pre-season roster.

Also, it seems like Lukowich has been put on waivers. No source yet but this is what the word is.

What a burn to Hodgson considering he seemed pretty confident to play at the next level because he had outgrown the juniors.

lol! Some poster on CDC was saying how Hodgon was a lock for the 9 games and was had a very good source haha.

I think more or less a lot of these moves are realities of the salary cap.

Today is the final day for all the teams to place players on waivers without them being picked up by other teams. Seeing how Lukowich has seen limited ice time, I can see him being the odd man out yet the Canucks do not want to give him away.

He was included as a salary dump from SJ anyways. We can't be spending that kind of money on a 8th d-man.

He won't get any playing time here so I assume he'll be happy to be going elsewhere.

I think he can be picked up by other teams, like how the Oilers placed Rob Schremp on waivers the other day and he got picked up by the Islanders today

I think you are right. Guess it is a salary dump of some sort.

He was so excited during interviews after the trade because it has always been his childhood dream to play for the Canucks.

Well, it should have been obvious from the start that when he got traded here, he was going to need to show he has the capability and ability to play for what they are paying him. He should know that it was a salary dump on the part of SJ.

For the price he is getting paid, there is no way Vancouver could've kept him for his current salary. And with SOB just signing a contract and him losing something like 15 pounds or more, it was obvious he was the odd man out.

All the defensemen knew what was going to happen at the end of the preseason. They all knew they had more than enough d-men on 1 way contracts. They all knew they are all fighting for a spot.

It isn't personal. It is just business.

Sucks that Hodgson got sent down. He was at GM Place today as was AV and Gillis. Heard it on the team, but Getzlaf was also sent back down when he was 19, in similar circumstances and he came back 100% NHL ready. Anyways, looking forward to the season.

the best teams and "model" franchises seem to rarely have 19 year olds playing for them.

Exactly. We're not a developing team. Our franchise is more further along than that and I'm sure if we weren't, Luongo wouldn't have signed with the club.

Spezza was sent down one year too early in his career. The next year he played lights out and made sure it didn't happen again.

HODGSON TO BRAMPTON

Vancouver Canucks President & General Manager Mike Gillis announced that the Canucks have re-assigned center Cody Hodgson to the Brampton Battalion of the OHL and now have 28 players on their pre-season roster.

“He just wasn’t ready,” said head coach Alain Vigneault. “We really believe that this young man has a tremendous amount of upside, but at the end of the day he didn’t show any signs that he was ready to play at this level. This is the National Hockey League. It’s the best league in the world. We felt that the best thing was for him to go back to junior, to his team. We’re confident we’re going to have a better player next year.”

The Canucks have also placed Brad Lukowich, Lawrence Nycholat and Michael Funk on waivers.

Shirokov is wearing #25 while Tanner Glass is wearing #15. Rick Rypien and Kevin Bieksa did not participate in practice Tuesday at UBC.

“Kevin tweaked his groin slightly in Edmonton,” said Alain Vigneault. “Ryp was just sick in Edmonton. He should be ready to practice tomorrow.”

Jannik Hansen, who dropped the gloves with Gilbert Brule Sunday night in Edmonton, broke three fingers on his right hand and is expected to be out 6-8 weeks.

The lines were as follows:

D. Sedin H. Sedin Burrows
Shirokov Kesler Samuelsson
Raymond Wellwood Bernier
Hordichuk Johnson Glass

SHATTERING GLASS

Twenty-five-year-old Tanner Glass quietly flew into training camp under the radar, but after performing well this pre-season, he’s earned himself a spot on the Canucks roster.

“Never having heard about him or seeing him, he caught our attention right away by the energy he brought to the table and the physicality he brought to the table,” said Vigneault. “He seemed to be dependable at both ends of the rink. Sometimes certain players get unlucky, like Jannik did, and that opened a spot and he was the next guy that we all felt was deserving to start the season with us.”

“I’m here,” said Glass. “I think I belong here, and I hope the players and coaches do too. I came in played hard, finished my checks, and played with energy. I think that’s a role needed on most teams in this league and I’m happy I can fill that role here.”

“I achieved the goal of making the opening day roster; now the goal is to get into the lineup as much as I can [and] help the team win.”

Twenty-six-year-old defenseman Aaron Rome has also claimed a spot on the Canucks roster.

“It feels pretty good just to be part of the team [and] do whatever I can to help the guys out,” said Rome. “It was a tough camp, a lot of good players here, very, very competitive. I’m just happy to be part of the starting day roster.”

RECORD NUMBERS

The Canucks are proud to announce that the four pre-season games broadcasted on Rogers Sportsnet Pacific brought in record numbers. The average minute audience for all four games was 234,000 breaking the previous record of 147,000 set in 2007.
