Oh well.. another player from Minnesota.
Maybe it's Gillis' plan to draft players from the 4 rival cities so they get more pumped each time playing them!

A lot of people had him in the top 10-13 so to get him at 22 isn't bad. He's small but the game is a lot friendlier now to small players then it has been in the past. I don't mind the gamble, how do you pass on him when he's still available? It's a lot better then an off the board type gamble, Patrick White...cough.

Schroeder's highlight package has him picking top corner with every shot... hopefully those aren't the only times he's scored.

wow awesome pick for 22nd, he was ranked near Ellis and they're both around the same size... TSN's Pierre McGuire ranked him higher than Ellis

Decent pick I thought. If possible I would of wanted a D since we have like nobody in our system but in terms of picking the best player available (in terms of rankings at least) it was a good pick. His size does worry me a bit but in this NHL era I think I can live with it. I'm just glad we didn't do anything wack like many have mentioned Patrick White lol

Luongo's seat at draft table suggests deal may be in the bag
By Jason Botchford, The Province
June 26, 2009 4:51 PM
VANCOUVER — Canucks GM Mike Gillis has been holding an ace up his sleeve and he played it at Vancouver's draft table in Montreal.
The Canucks have been closing in on a Roberto Luongo extension and there have been many indications they have already reached a deal in principal. The story was furthered when Luongo showed up in Montreal Friday to sit in with Gillis at the Canucks draft table.
Gillis wouldn't confirm the deal but said the sides have been "talking the same language" and have been seeking the same goals since they started negotiating.
By NHL rule, nothing can be made official until July 1. An ESPN reporter said Thursday on TEAM 1040 the deal will be announced on July 1.
Most of the doubt of whether there is an actual deal or not disappeared when Luongo showed up with the Canucks in Montreal.
If a Luongo deal is wrapped up, it gives Gillis a significant bargaining chip in his ongoing negotiation with the Sedin twins or in future negotiations with other unrestricted free agents. Even if a deal hasn't been finalized, it's unlikely Luongo would be at the draft table if one weren't imminent.
It's a late ace card played by Gillis and may be why he has remained confident the Sedins will re-sign despite a stalemate that has lasted nearly a year. One thing Luongo gives a team is a chance. Any team with Luongo has a chance to make the playoffs and an opportunity to make a run.
And, with Luongo locked up, free agents won't have to worry about him walking away in a year if they sign with the Canucks. That could be a powerful inducement for players, many of whom think Luongo is the best goalie in the game. It's why Gillis was willing to make a Luongo extension a priority even though he has plenty on his plate, including his restricted free agents, the Sedins and the draft.
It could also make it more palatable for players to take less money.
The Sedins are being asked to take less than market value to stay in Vancouver. But if they do it, they have a chance to play for a team which could include both Luongo and Marian Gaborik. Those around the NHL believe the Canucks have a shot to get all four players — the Sedins, Luongo and Gaborik — under contract. Gaborik, as reported in The Province, has already bought a house in the Vancouver area. He wants to play in Vancouver. It's believed his long injury history could be better managed in Vancouver where he could work with noted physiotherapist Rick Celebrini.
This is all a best-case scenario. But if it came together it would be a tough one for the twins to walk away from if they are serious about playing on a team that has a chance to win the Stanley Cup.
In the Canucks final playoff series in Chicago, Luongo told people he wanted to make a decision about his future before the draft. It appears he made it before a meeting with Gillis during the NHL awards in Las Vegas.
Lupien has been all over the map denying the deal, apparently in an attempted smokescreen of the Luongo extension. But where there is smoke, there's fire.

From Botchford's twitter: Canucks saw plenty of Schroeder this year. His teammate is a also a Canuck draft pick, mystery man Patrick White,
Canucks spent a lot of time working on this draft and then just had schroeder fall in their lap
E.J. McGuire, the NHL's top amateur scout, said Schroeder is "destined for stardom in the NHL."
Scout Jack Barzee on Schroeder: "A dynamic player, a leader. Has developed into a complete off. and def. threat every time on the ice,"
Worth noting: Matt Duchene played with/against 2 20-year-olds a night. Schroeder played with and against entire teams of 20-plus year olds
If all goes right, NHL comparables to Schroeder: St. Louis, Kane and Gionta
EJ McGuire thinks he can make the jump: "He's as capable of contributing as was Gagne last year, and Kane -- He's right in that ballpark."

Talent Analysis
At 5’9/180, Schroeder isnt' the biggest freshman in stature, but he may be the most complete. Schroeder is a highly intelligent player that thinks and understands the game exceedingly well. He possesses excellent vision, awareness, and knows where plays will end up. He is instinctive and creative. Schroeder has the ability to make players around him better and his infectious enthusiasm and passion for the game is difficult to miss.
While some may feel that Schroeder’s lack of size could hinder his chances of being a top ten selection at the upcoming NHL Entry Draft, he has proven time and again that he is more than capable of competing against bigger and stronger players. Schroeder is remarkably strong on his skates and while he is still growing into his body, the strength that he now has he uses to great advantage. This can be seen in areas such as protecting the puck and his play along the boards. Schroeder has also demonstrated that he can handle the physically punishing aspects of the game as well.
Schroeder is an excellent skater with tremendous speed who is also very good in transition. He is versatile in that he can play both center and wing equally well. He is a superb playmaker with passing skills that are among the best in college hockey today. One aspect that sets him apart from many collegiate rookies is his great patience and poise with the puck.
“He has a very low panic level with the puck,” noted Lucia. “He is not afraid to hold it and hold it and wait for people to get in a position to receive it. When you’re in a position to have a good shot, he’s going to find you.”
Schroeder is also a confident player who works and competes hard. He is the ultimate team player who puts his team first. Schroeder plays the game with a sense of maturity that is rarely seen in college freshmen, especially in the first half of the season.
So how does Schroeder describe himself?
“I would say that I’m an offensive type of player, but I can play both ends of the ice. I can definitely see the ice very well and make my teammates around me better. I would say that I’m more of a playmaker, but I can be a goal scorer too."
Schroeder possesses a terrific shot and can get shots to the net. However, he could stand to shoot the puck more often. Schroeder admits that he has a bit of the pass-first, shoot-second mindset.
“I kind of do, yeah," he said laughing. "But I’m working on changing that though, so I think more will come. That’s one of the things that they have been trying to get me to do is getting more shots on net.”
Lucia thinks Schroder's shot is underrated.
“I think if you watch him, he can shoot," Lucia said. "He’s still kind of a pass-first type of player, but when he gets into a scoring area, he’s a got very heavy shot.”
One area of Schroeder’s game that continues to progress quite nicely is the defensive side. He sees regular duty on the Golden Gophers penalty-killing unit and has shown that he is also willing to take responsibility in areas such as blocking shots. While it has been a steady learning process for the rookie since his days with the NTDP, it is an area that Schroeder feels is still a work in progress.
“The main things that I got out of the program were that I learned how to become a better defensive player and how to play at both ends of the ice," he said. "I was a pretty offensive guy in high school and never really knew how to play D, but then once I went there I learned a lot more. Now, I’d say that I’m ok, but I obviously could be a lot better. I want to keep improving on that.”
While Sidney Crosby is his favorite NHL player, he would agree on a comparison to a more obscure player.
“I don’t try to pattern my game after any one player. I think it’s more of a combination of players," he said. "I don’t really try to go for style. If I had to pick one, I would say Pierre-Marc Bouchard from the Wild. I think that’s a player that I’m kind of like.”
