It’s remarkable how arrogant the fan base of a team with zero Stanley Cups, no Hall of Fame players, and two homoerotic Swedish twins that seem physically afraid of the playoffs can act. It’s literally mind-boggling! These days, when they’re not too busy demanding trades on local radio shows or reminiscing about that year they almost signed Wayne Gretzky, you can usually find Canucks fans preaching about how hosting Jarome Iginla and the Canadian Olympic team will finally establish their city as a genuine hockey town (sort of like how marrying Lamar Odom made Khloe Kardashian a real celebrity – legitimacy by association).
Next time you see a suspected pyramid schemer in the corner of a trendy wine bar sporting a $200 hair cut, $900 suit, and emanating a distinct air of scumbag from his Drakkar Noir-soaked pores - go ahead and ask him about Kevin Bieksa, because odds are he’s a Vancouver Canucks fan and doesn't want to cry himself to sleep again before throwing out obscene predictions about the Norris Trophy.

We caught a break there. Canadiens were playing a little loose due to fatigue. The goals we were getting made it look like they were playing against bush leaguers.
Time to build on a win and not dwell on a win. Hopefully.

Analysis of Leafs-Canucks tampering decision: No real league punishment
Maple Leafs fined $25,000, Burke under gag order
By Jason Botchford, The ProvinceOctober 8, 2009 6:25 AM
The NHL went to great lengths Wednesday, and surely endured great pain, to tell the world five things we already knew:
1. The Toronto Maple Leafs are guilty of tampering with the Sedin twins.
2. The Leafs have been acting inappropriately regarding the Vancouver Canucks.
3. The Leafs will pretty much get away with it.
4. Tampering has been reduced to a minor offence.
5. And, finally, you can't take Gary Bettman seriously.
It is Bettman who again and again in league meetings has stressed to general managers that there is no tolerance for tampering, that cases will be handled with a hammer. And it was Bettman who, during Brian Burke's agonizingly transparent rule-bending, ethics-breaching move to Toronto, made his call to arms public.
"If there's tampering going on, ultimately there are no secrets in this world. We will get to the bottom of it," Bettman vowed in May 2008. "And I'm no fan of tampering. And when it happens, it gets punished severely.
"A team that meddles with an individual under contract could face heavy fines and the loss of draft picks. And an individual who talks to a team while he's still under contract would face fines and a possible suspension."
Seventeen months later, severe punishment has been reduced to a gag order. "Heavy fines" and the "loss of draft picks" have turned into $25,000 US. And Bettman's call to arms has become a call to prayer. Because we should all pray that the Leafs aren't allowed to operate above the law because of their power, friends and influence.
Here's the kicker: Even if the Canucks think the decision is a farce, they are not allowed to express it, by NHL order.
In a suspiciously timed decision Wednesday, the NHL sent out a memo to declare Burke's Leafs violated provisions of NHL By-Law 15 and have been fined $25,000. The release of the findings came a day after Canucks GM Mike Gillis made media waves after expressing his concern in an interview on TEAM 1040.
What took so long? In June, Toronto head coach Ron Wilson went on the country's biggest sports radio station, and, in a general, paraphrased way of course, said: "Hold on one more day Sedins! We're coming for ya!"
Wilson's comments were ignored, especially in Toronto, until a story in The Province linked them to tampering and the bylaw.
Did Wilson's comments get the Sedins more money from the Canucks, whose negotiations with the twins went down to the midnight hour? The NHL wouldn't know. Despite its "thorough" investigation, it never even interviewed the twins.
"No one contacted us," Henrik admitted.
But we do know in 1999, the St. Louis Blues tampered with defenceman Scott Stevens before he re-signed with the Devils. They were fined $1.4 million and lost a first-round draft pick.
This time, there were two players involved and the result is only a $25,000 fine in a case you could argue goes all the way back to the 2008 NHL draft in Ottawa. That's where Burke suggested to media members that the Canucks were looking into dealing the twins. It was either an attempt to stir up trouble for Gillis, a new general manager, or there were long-term plans.
The NHL brushed off what happened in Ottawa even though it failed to interview most of the key people involved.
"The league has found no evidence whatsoever to support Vancouver's broader concerns that the [Leafs] may have engaged in any other conduct or activities vis-a-vis the Sedins that were in contravention of the league's rules or policies relating to tampering," deputy commissioner Bill Daly said in his statement.
The NHL did acknowledge the Leafs played fast and loose with the rules of conduct when they aired Burke's comments on TV suggesting the Canucks were trying to trade Kevin Bieksa and Alex Burrows to Tampa Bay. The trade was fiction, the segment low rent.
And an interesting point here is that Bieksa and Burrows are two players who have had their names dragged through the trade rumour mud before by others. Were they easy targets in an orchestrated dig at the Canucks or was it all just an honest slip of the tongue? The NHL's findings after a "thorough" investigation didn't make that clear.
The Leafs got off without punishment, though the league did admit the situation was "unfortunate and inappropriate."
Maybe the boldest thing the league did was issue a gag order on Burke.
"Both clubs have been advised of these findings, and both have been instructed to refrain from further public comment of any kind relating to these matters," Daly said.
That will be put to the test when the Leafs come to Vancouver on Oct. 24.

I can't believe this is the decision that has come down as a result of the alleged tampering. I hope this is not the end of this story as Burke also needs to get his hand slapped for what he has done or else the cover-up will further boost his ego as being untouchable.
I'd love to hear a Toronto columnist's view on the subject.

Al Strachan was on the team 1040 yesterday and pretty much said, Burkie is pals with Bettman and the brass at NHL offices. He is untouchable. If anyone can find that radio interview or tv interview with ron wilson talking about the sedins for like 5 minutes please post it. I can't find it.

Kev | According to TSN ( http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=294104), nothing will come from Burke's comments as it doesn't constitute as tampering in the bylaws. I think he did get a verbal warning from the league though.

In announcing the penalty, Bill Daly, the deputy commissioner, said that Wilson had made reference to the Sedin twins in an interview while they were still under contract. They each re-signed with Vancouver.
