| I don't think Niemi was amazing, he was good but not amazing. He got extremely lucky on tons of chances.

I was listening to the post game show on the radio and they said the Hawks had something like 16 blocked shots but the question everyone was asking was why the Canucks shooters never look before shooting.

Defensively - I say A- does the things needed, mistakes here and there, typical
Play without the puck - very good as well! like tonight!
Play WITH the puck - DOES NOT MAKE SMART DECISIONS
moving with the puck, thats why hes here for another few years, he does that just fine...
its his decisions with the puck that makes me believe he will be a bust this year
the old saying u need to shoot to score doesnt apply here becuz as i said b4..and earlier int eh season...
he shoots with someone INFRONT OF HIM ANYWAYS in which it leads to a turnover for the other team. I believe he had SOB or Erhoff as his partner, and those two cheat a little bit in the offensive zone. thus he is caught back and u rely on SOB to skate back?
hahaha
i want to see Edler break out this year, i really do, but until he makes some smarter decisions of when to shoot, its not happenin

I also agree Edler will come around. Sometimes he will make such a great play and show a lot of patience with the puck and make a real smart decision in his end, while other times he will cough up the puck. Dmen take the longest to pan out in the NHL IMO. He will come around. Blueliners shoot to create chances, not necessarily to score
Long-bomb goals hard to get as NHL teams collapse to front of net Quote:
Threading a needle may be easier than getting point shots through a maze of bodies.
That's the common conclusion when the bagel factory on the back end of the Vancouver Canucks is churning out zeroes. After all, Sami Salo and Alex Edler have yet to score and Kevin Bieksa has managed just one goal at the quarter-pole. But lost in that narrow overview is the fact that the blueline brigade has adjusted well to today's NHL traffic jam in the offensive zone.
The Canucks led the league with 196 shots from their defence heading into Wednesday's games and joined the Philadelphia Flyers as the only teams with 10 or more points from their top-three blueliners. Christian Ehrhoff has 12 points while Bieksa has 11 and Edler 10.
So, what gives?
It means the Canucks, like any other team, aren't getting long-bomb goals from the back end. But they are getting better reads. Defencemen are realizing that lateral movement along the blueline coupled with quick releases results in shots on goal, deflections, rebounds and plenty of assists. It's a stark change from a Salo slapper finding its way from the point to the twine.
"It's way different now," said Salo, who has only 20 shots in 14 games.
"Look at Ryan Johnson. Try to get the puck through him. He throws his head at the puck and those guys [shot-blockers] are the best penalty killers. They sacrifice their bodies -- and I'm not saying they didn't 10 years ago, but it's way more now. If you don't have a shooting lane, you have to shoot the puck short side and that's what we've been doing."
Salo has never scored more than 14 goals in any season and the five he had in 60 games last season was a low mark for that many outings. But he did have three goals in seven postseason games, so you can poke some holes in the no-goal theory. Then again, scoring chances often come from defencemen joining the rush or pinching down low to bang home rebounds.
"My goals over the years are on the power play," added Salo. "There are not many chances for the defencemen 5-on-5. It's usually when you're jumping up and the other team has made a mistake because every team backchecks so hard. It's not as easy as it was even five years ago."
Edler has mastered the art of the long-lead pass and the quick cross-ice feed. Yet, as much as he packs a heavy point shot and has totalled 40 shots, he too has had to adjust his windup. And that could have something to do with his transition game and being more of a defensive liability than an offensive threat with a minus-5 rating. He begs to differ.
"I don't think it affects my game or that I'm playing any differently because I don't have any goals," said Edler. "The right thing is to not get frustrated and if I join the rush and keep shooting the puck, it will come. But nothing from the blueline. You have to really move a bit or fake a shot just to get it by the first guy."
All this doesn't surprise associate coach Rick Bowness. He has seen an evolution in the game where blocked shots are happening in the slot and not at the point because teams are collapsing in front of their goalies as much as they challenge the point.
"Ninety per cent of blocked shots are at the net," said Bowness. "It's not the forward coming out to block the shot, it's the traffic at the net. That's when the shots aren't getting through. You have to get in the shooting lane as quick as you can because you don't have time to crank it. It's better to put the puck short side and that shot will create a scramble."
Bowness believes a switch from the right to left side will help Edler reach his potential after netting a career-high 10 goals last season. After all, he's just 23 and still trying to marry his good vision with a good shot.
"Everybody sees the ice differently and you have to work through his eyes," said Bowness. "Alex is really good at freezing guys going left and then going right. Very few can do that. But he knows you have to change your shooting angle and shoot more wristers, because you just don't have the time." | |

So, shoot the fucking puck right at their fucking heads and call it a night. Pretty soon nobody will be left to block shots. Salo has the opportunity to injure someone else for a change. Having said that, make sure you aim for the nuts or the head/face. Maybe kneecaps and ankles. Otherwise it's no good. Make sure the rest of your team mates get the hell out of the way, too. Shootfest. That's the way to do it. And bring a curling rock as well. If you're not going to score, might as well send some of the opposing players to the hospital. LOL.
