Canucks pick up Mikael Samuelsson from Red Wings
Three-year deal for player on team's radar for 'long time'
By Jason Botchford, The Province
July 3, 2009
The Canucks sure like Mikael Samuelsson's versatility, right-hand shot, and Stanley Cup ring. Because they didn't wait long to make a hefty offer to the former Red Wing, who established himself as a 40-point player in Detroit.
Those 40 points, which Samuelsson hit in each of the past two years, got him a three-year, $7.5 million offer from the Canucks on July 1. It took Samuelsson some time, at least a day, but he finally decided that kind of scratch was enough to say goodbye to the land of long, long hockey seasons.
Samuelsson indicated he had many offers. It's been reported that the Wings were looking to keep Samuelsson for about $1.5 million a year. If true, that would make the difference in money huge. But still Samuelsson said he had to take some time choosing between Vancouver and Detroit, the two teams it came down to.
"I liked it in Detroit, I have no hard feelings for them," Samuelsson said. "But they came up too short, and too late. In my mind they made their choices when they signed guys through the year."
Hey, it's not easy leaving the best franchise in hockey. And, for the Canucks, he didn't come cheap. But they don't seem to mind, even if Samuelsson will turn 33 in December.
"We've liked Mikael for a long time," assistant GM Lorne Henning said. "We liked a lot of things he brought to the table. For sure, he was at the top of our list."
Samuelsson is a late bloomer who has a low odometer reading. Just 466 games. That makes him a good gamble for the Canucks who need his versatility, especially on the power play.
"He's certainly going to be on the top two lines," Henning said.
For now, Samuelsson is expected to be the Sedin twins' running mate on the power play. It won't be the first time.
"At the Olympics they played together and I think at the World Championships they did at one time," Henning said.
"They like playing with each other and it's a great power-play setup. It's always good when you can have a right-handed shooter with the twins and he does have a great shot."
Samuelsson can man the area around the net and be the right-hand shot head coach Alain Vigneault is always looking for to play with the twins.
He can also play the point, which he did for most of the playoffs in Detroit. This will be especially important during Sami Salo's inevitable visits to the injured list.
Improving the power play was one of the Canucks' No. 1 goals this offseason after finishing 17th in the NHL last year.
Samuelsson joked that he won't bring his Stanley Cup ring in the dressing room on the first day.
"If they ask me and they are serious about it, I will bring it in," he said.

Cory Schneider: Time for the boy to be a man
He's proven his worth and ready for next challenge
By Ben Kuzma, The Province
July 3, 2009
Been there, done that.
Cory Schneider admits he didn't have a December to remember in a relief role with the Vancouver Canucks. The AHL's premier goaltender will also admit he has nothing left to accomplish at the minor-league level after backstopping the Manitoba Moose to the Calder Cup final.
"I feel I've proved myself at the American League level and done everything I can over the past few years and obviously the next progression is to challenge yourself at the next level," Schneider, 23, said Thursday. "That extra year really helped and the playoff push was important for me to go through that experience. It's time to make that next step."
Which, of course, brings up a crease conundrum.
With workhorse starter Roberto Luongo about to sign a long-term contract extension -- and free-agent backup Jason LaBarbera accepting a two-year deal in Phoenix -- the Canucks need to promote Schneider to increase his trade value. However, that leaves the franchise short of stoppers on the farm. Curtis Sanford, who cleared waivers in January before going 7-3-3 as a Moose backup, is shopping his services elsewhere. So, aside from finding a combination of keepers that works in Manitoba, the challenge is convincing Luongo that the franchise's best trade asset requires proper playing time.
Schneider needs 12 to 15 starts to solidify his NHL worth. He needs to show that his 2-4-1 record, bloated 3.38 goals-against average and .877 saves percentage when Luongo was injured was part of the teething process and not a career crusher. On Dec. 23 at San Jose, Schneider looked shell-shocked in allowing five goals on 15 shots in just 21 minutes. But when he returned to the minors, Schneider's 28-10-1 mark, 2.04 GAA and .928 saves percentage spoke of a solid structure in his game -- both physically and mentally. And when he went 14-7 in the postseason with a 2.15 GAA and .922 saves percentage, his ticket to the NHL was punched.
"It's all about feeling like you belong because I had a tough time really going in and feeling comfortable up there in my stint," added Schneider, who'll be a restricted free agent following the 2009-10 season. "I did some good and bad things and with what I accomplished in Manitoba, I'm more ready and comfortable to make that next step."
Schneider is also prepared for being moved this summer in a trade or given just enough time in the NHL to hone his craft before being packaged. Regardless, he won't be distracted by being fodder for fantasy trade scenarios on the talk-show circuit.
"I've been dealing with it ever since the Canucks traded for Louie," said Schneider. "He's the premier goalie in the league and you're going to do everything you can to keep him. That's not lost on me. For the past couple of years, I've seen this coming to kind of a crossroads and eventually it would be that he would stay or go and they would be forced to make a decision with me.
"I'm over that. I've been through it a lot at the [trade] deadline and the draft."
As for LaBarbera, a two-year deal is more security than playing ahead of Ilya Bryzgalov, who had 65 starts last season. However, Coyotes GM Don Maloney was in Rangers management when LaBarbera played in the New York system.
"The contract was a big factor, but it was not an easy decision," said LaBarbera, who was 3-2-2 as Luongo's backup with a 2.66 GAA and .918 saves percentage. "Vancouver was such a special place for me, but you really don't want to sell yourself short and being considered a backup. I still feel I have a lot to give and can challenge for being a No. 1 goalie in the league.
"Playing behind Roberto, that would have been tough to do." bkuzma@theprovince.com

Yeah, I really doubt MG is going to leave our D like that. Something will happen soon, whether it be Beauchemin, Barker to an offer sheet or a trade for Kaberle(very unlikely)....he'll get it done.

Seriously. Getting him would be INSANE.
With 7.2 mil left, I'd throw some major money at him.

Something to keep in mind when making offers on RFA's.
These are from 2008-2009 but I can't imagine they'd be that different now.
If you offer more then $2,615,623 you have to give up a 1st and a 3rd round pick to the team you poached from. More then $3,923,434 it's a 1st, 2nd and 3rd. More then $5,231,246 two 1sts, a 2nd and a 3rd. Lastly if greater then $6,539,061 it's four 1st rounders.

Im hoping we dump Demitra's salary somehow.... at 4 Mil thats way too much for him. Maybe Trade him for a Dman, then sign a guy like Lang, Tanguay, Afinogenov to take his place..... of course re-sign Sundin. People dont realise that Sundin also gives others like Kesler and Demitra space on the ice.

Darcy Hordichuk previously played for Nashville. Tennessee does not tax you on any wages earned so the first season Darcy signed with the Canucks (same year as when he last played for Nashville) he is not being taxed by the Canadian government, but still under Tennessee. When he plays his second season he will start paying taxes therefore the team will pay him more money up front.
