Phaneuf's hit definitely should not be suspendable. Sure, he was a little late, but it's not like he hit Kopitar from behind.
The question everyone should be asking is why was Phaneuf, a defenceman, the first guy in on the forecheck? This was a fine example of why he did not make Team Canada and I, for one, glad he didn't make it no matter how hot Elisha Cuthbert is.

If you watch the clip closely, they already had the offensive zone. At which point a defensmans primary task is to hold the blue line, and retreat secondary; which is exactly what transpired.

apparently if a player has any tape (or anything else) on their hands below the wrist and it causes injury to another player, it's an automatic match penalty. i didn't catch if that's during fights only.
