I'm going to agree above... I would trade Kesler + something like Schneider for Kovalchuk... and I have to say that I was always surprised Kesler went public with this decree for hometown discounts, because I know someone who used to do work at his house for him, and they told me he was always walking around talking about how he couldn't wait until his contract was up so he could get $$$rich$$$...

I'm guessing if signed long term, Kovys going to ask for 10+ million a year... I think this will cause too much cap issues

There's no way Kovalchuk will get 10M+ a year when Crosby, Ovechkin and Malkin are all getting paid 9M a year. He's not even as good as those 3. Fun fact, if we do trade Kesler + whatever package for Kovi, Kesler and Kovi both wear #17!

Kovi trade wont work here
even if he does land here, what type of contract are we gonna offer him without ruffling the feathers of others such as the sedins and burrows who definately took a huge home town discount considering their numbers right now
that could easily mess up the room, and we know what a messed up room does to the on ice product
ie. Calgary

League maximum is 11mil
when Crosby and Ovie signed, the ceiling was lower
which is why they dont command 10mil, they can now if they were to look for money
Vinny's contract is league maximum
regardless, teams with "compete" will not be able to afford Kovie in the off season
its only if he's willing to tak a paycut to the numbers of around 7-8mil before the winners will even consider messing with their lineup

I still think Kovalchuk's gonna be asking for too much for Canucks willing to pay.
Especially with the home town discounts several players took.
He obviously turned down 10mil just to get out of Atlanta. But somehow, I don't think he's
gonna be asking for much less just because he's going to a different team.
