That still totals up to $36M, but the cap hit is now only $3M/year, and the guy can play good for six years and then just sit on his thumbs and still get a decent annual salary (unless he retires). | Hossa's contract is pretty much set up for a buyout or retirement, in the final 4 years, he only gets on average, 875k per year. The first 8 years, he get gets 7.45M I believe. It's probably not worth his time to play 4 more years and only make 3.5m in total when he already has like 59m/62.4m in the bank already.
His cap hit is 5.2M, basically saves the Hawks 2.25m per year in cap space, that 2.25 can equal a pretty serviceable 2nd liner.

What about the whole Pronger mess too. Looks like Philly is on the hook for his huuuge salary even after he retires lol? Anyone have any updates. Quote:

Trading Schneider anytime before an extension is done will handicap the Canucks because Lu's agent will use that against them.
Hodgson is basically an untouchable and Schroeder is a great prospect. Canucks are actually pretty damn lucky to have those two guys drop down to our position during the past two years.

I don't think the team is on the hook when the player retires... that's why Chicago wants it built in that Hossa retires... same reason Naslund retired this year (besides not wanting to play anymore) but it saves the Rangers his salary this coming season against their cap.

Vancouver Canucks forward Alex Burrows could be facing charges stemming from an on-ice incident in a Montreal summer hockey league game.
According to a report on RDS.ca, an investigation is underway in response to a complaint filed on July 21 that states Burrows violently struck the face of a goaltender with his stick during a game at the Excellent Ice Arena in Kirkland, Que.
The report said the family of the goaltender, 19-year old Koray Celik, would not comment about the incident on the advice of lawyers.
"Police went to the arena, but there are no charges right now," Burrows' agent Paul Corbeil told The Globe and Mail. "[Police arrived] because some people called the police. They spoke with Alex but nothing more than that."
The summer league, also known as the PHL (Pond Hockey League), is described by Corbeil as a summertime circuit for professional, minor pro and college players.
| Damnnnn what's Burrows doing playing in some recreational hockey league?!? Those guys are all going to be idiots and try to hurt him on purpose and crap... stupid!
Canucks assistant GM Laurence Gilman told The Globe that the team was "gathering all the facts" but would make no further comment.

Please refrain from using over-exaggerations that are NOT justified.
Oh and Kessel please (depending on amount of contract + length).

| Report: Canucks President and CEO Chris Zimmerman resigning Tuesday
VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - A number of sources tell News1130 Sports that Canucks President and CEO Chris Zimmerman will be resigning from the organization Tuesday morning.
Zimmerman was named to that position in the fall of 2006, and was responsible for the overall strategic direction of the company, including broadcasting, marketing, sponsorship and ticket sales. Before joining the Canucks, Zimmerman served as President and CEO of Nike/Bauer Hockey for 3 years.

The Canucks have had the WORST marketing in all of sports. #1 reason; they don't employ anybody who is a fan of the team for the higher up positions.

I'm sure if it was the other way around and Alex Burrow's yappy mouth earned himself a slash to the face, Canuckdom would be all up in arms and expecting penalties to the fullest extent.

Pretty dumb move on the part of Alex. You just signed a huge deal so you know you're going to have haters yapping at you. I think right now he should be worried about not getting sued.

Not to mention when the Canucks changed their logo in 1998 and had their "New Grit" campaign; on all their ads they tried to give each of the players a nickname... they were the least creative nicknames I have ever heard:
Ohlund - "Ohli"
Baron - "Bear"
Bertuzzi - "Bert"
Cloutier - "Clouts"
Linden - "Trev"
The Canucks think they can just GIVE anybody a nickname but it's the ones that are earned that actually stick around over time (ex. The Russian Rocket.)
The same goes for the 7th Man campaign, you can't simply MAKE a tradition and expect it to be a hit.

You said he is in trouble but we all know that this is not the case (or not yet atleast. No formal charges = not in trouble).

The Canucks think they can just GIVE anybody a nickname but it's the ones that are earned that actually stick around over time (ex. The Russian Rocket.) | These "nicknames" are usually the ones the players have for each other, and fans were tossing them around long before the franchise decided to use them in a marketing campaign. It's not just the Canucks, listen to almost any player interview for any player on any team. They all have their short, usually one-syllable nicknames - when you're zipping around in the middle of play and Ohlund has the puck, calling for a pass with "MATTY!" or "OHLI!" is a lot more efficient than "Hey Mattias!".
Some of them make sense, some don't to anyone outside the room. A few years ago, I heard from someone who has connections to the team that Alex Auld's "private" nickname was "12-Step"... because of his initials. She said it had nothing to do with anything beyond that, but it's still not the kind of thing you want being bounced around the press.

The Flyers thought if they signed him while he's 34 they can get away with it. But the new contract doesn't kick in till he's 35, which could potentially count towards the cap for them.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I've read Holmgren is willing to take the hit if this is the case though.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Canucks Sports & Entertainment has named General Manager Mike Gillis as their new president, after the official announcement that President and CEO Chris Zimmerman has stepped down for family reasons.
Gillis, in addition to his GM duties, will work with Chief Operating Officer Victor de Bonis on the overall strategic direction of the company, including broadcast, marketing, sponsorship and ticket sales, finance, human resources and arena operations.
Zimmerman spent the past three seasons providing the overall strategic direction for the company. He has decided to re-locate his family back to the eastern United States. He joined the organization after working in the U.S. with Nike Bauer Hockey.
