Hello, this is a feature that will run through the entire season and aims to recap the weekend's events and boils those events down to one admittedly superficial fact or stupid opinion about each team. Feel free to complain about it.
Now before all of you start crying that I'm an idiot and I don't understand the game and I'm just a Penguins homer: Please understand that I love Alex Ovechkin(notes).
I think he's the best player in the world, and I think he has all the talent and skill to become one of the best players ever by the time he retires. He not only scores unbelievable goals with frightening consistency, he also sets up goals with the threat of his shot and plays with a physical edge not often seen in players of his caliber.
In the past I've defended Ovechkin's numerous questionable plays. The guy is legitimately a freight train (he's 6-2, 233!) on the ice and I think much of what he does to put his opponents in a bad position is incidental. Certainly, given his immediate reaction to the hit on Brian Campbell(notes), I don't think he meant to knock the guy out of the game or put him into the boards like that -- and yet here we are.
The puck was clearly away from Campbell when Ovechkin engaged him, and the hit gave Campbell no way to protect himself crashing into the end-boards. Textbook boarding call in a very dangerous part of the ice. Of course it deserved a match penalty, it was an exceptionally stupid play on Ovie's part.
This will likely result in his second suspension this season. He could have gotten one for that hit on Briere a few years ago and the one on Kaleta in November. He blind-sided Dustin Brown away from the play a few years back. Jamie Heward got stretchered off the ice after Ovie hit him from behind. He slew-footed Rich Peverley in October. He's hit Wideman (no video, but here's an article), Gonchar and Gleason knee-to-knee. He shot a puck at Rob Scuderi after the whistle.
Any one, two or even three of those incidents could have been dismissed as Ovechkin's ability to play dominant physical hockey getting a little out of control or maybe emotion getting the best of him. But add up all those incidents. There are nine of them in just a few years, with the majority happening either this season or last.
There's a clear pattern developing.

So imagine all these penalties were committed by, I dunno, let's say, just to pick a few players completely at random, Matt Cooke(notes) or Steve Ott(notes) or Jarkko Ruutu(notes). The criticisms would all have to be the same: dirty plays, several resulting in injuries, and he never actually fights to back up any of his questionable hits.
But none of those guys are ever gonna pop in 65 in a season, so it's a-okay to vilify them. I'm just as guilty as anyone.
There's going to be pressure from the League and the networks not to suspend Ovechkin and rightly so. He's one of the few players I'd actually shell out money to see live, and if I feel that way, think how a person with only passing interest in hockey feels.
But really, a play like this, and subsequent defense of it from Caps fans (hint: when you're on Mike Milbury's side of an argument, you're on the wrong side) is unconscionable. Someone's going to get seriously hurt one of these days, and it's going to put everyone -- especially Colin Campbell -- in a tough spot.
What should the league do about it? It should suspend him for a couple more games.
But what will it do? Hell, what can it do? Nothing beyond the requisite one-gamer, at most. For entirely business reasons, the League will never suspend Ovechkin for any portion of the season larger than a game or, in extreme cases, two, and it can't fine him an amount significant enough to make him think twice about his play.
The real question is at what point does, "Alex Ovechkin plays with an edge," turn into "Alex Ovechkin plays with a reckless disregard for his opponents' safety?" And when does that become, "Alex Ovechkin plays a dangerous, cheap game?"

Mikael Samuelsson was disappointed at not being named to Sweden's Olympic team. He's taking out his frustration on the Vancouver Canucks' opponents.
At age 33, Samuelsson is having a career season, including a week that saw him get his first NHL hat trick and finish with 6 goals and 10 points in four games to help the Canucks go 3-0-1 while completing the longest road trip in NHL history and returning home with a pair of victories. That effort earned him NHL First Star of the Week honors.
Samuelsson is a 30-goal scorer for the first time in his NHL career, but he's gotten a boost in the last week or so by being switched onto a line with the Sedin twins. His six-game goal-scoring streak ended Sunday, but he extended his points streak to seven games, during which he has 9 goals and 13 points.
Second Star: Lee Stempniak -- Kudos to Phoenix GM Don Maloney for landing Stempniak from Toronto at the trade deadline. Stempniak has fit right in with the Coyotes, scoring 5 goals in three games to help the Coyotes to a perfect 3-0-0 week.
Third Star: Pekka Rinne -- Rinne is earning the lion's share of the goaltending time in Nashville and has the Predators on the way to the playoffs. He beat both Southern California teams on the road last week, shutting out Anaheim, 1-0, and edging Los Angeles, 3-2.
During a opening-round KHL playoff game again Avtomobilist Ekaterinburg on March 14, Salavat Yulaev Ufa backup goalie Vitaly Kolesnik was chillin', chillin', mindin' his business on the bench when a fan broke in through the stands, swung a stick at the netminder's head and busted him open. The answer is "no", he probably didn't see that one coming.
Kolesnik went to the hospital after this scary, chaotic scene and was diagnosed with a concussion. Here's a Russian-language clip of the incident (via Russian Hockey Fans) that for some reason doesn't have Daniel Powter's "Bad Day" as its soundtrack:
Good to see the KHL's unstoppable good PR continues with that embarrassment of a situation, one that put the well-being of its player at serious risk. We've gone from fans setting off military flares in the stands during games to an allegedly inebriated fan smacking a goalie in the noggin with a stick on the bench; which is an unconscionable act, even if it turns out to be a Travis Bickle-like call for attention to KHL all-star Chris Simon(notes), as we suspect.
Automobilist won the game, 4-3, but Salavat Yulaev holds a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series. From Russian Hockey Fans, who hipped us to the story, some additional context on the assault:
Salavat Yulaev asked the league to suspend Ekaterinburg Arena for one match and consequently to play in front of no crowd as a measure of punishment. The league instead gave Avtomobilist a 1 million rubles fine and said that their participation to the KHL might be in jeopardy should these incidents happen again.
Vitaly Kolesnik gave a little interview to Sport-Express. He said that "some fans from the very beginning behaved very aggressively. I and other guys tried to quiet them, but we couldn't. Then suddenly I seen that a person got close to the ice and had a stick. I avoided the first hit, but then my head was hit several times. And I don't remember what happened right after."
Unfortunately, Mikael Milbury wasn't on the bench to swat away the assailant with a loafer; nor was John Torotellski able to squirt the attacker into submission with a water bottle filled with Smirnoff.
As for Ovechkin, I never liked him. That hit wasn't a hard hit. More of a push, but at the same time, he didn't have to do that. The puck was long gone. Was there something else between these two prior to this? Earlier in the game?
Another reason why I like "Cry Baby" over "Rasputin".
Looks like he was just finishing his check to me... And the puck wasn't "long gone", he hit a second after he got rid of it.
That Downie incident was absolutely disgusting. Worse than the recent Cooke or Ovechkin incidents, IMO. Fucker deserves to be suspended again.

The Washington Post reports that the National Hockey League has suspended Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin for two games for his hit on Chicago Blackhawks defenceman Brian Campbell on Sunday afternoon.
The two-time MVP and the league's leading scorer was given a five-minute major boarding penalty and a game misconduct in the first period for knocking Campbell into the boards. Campbell remained on the ice for several minutes before being helped to the dressing room by trainers.
ESPN.com is reporting that Campbell may miss the remainder of the season due to a broken clavicle and ribs suffered from the hit. The Blackhawks have recalled Nick Boynton of the AHL's Rockford IceHogs to replace Campbell on the blueline.

Oops no I didn't see his incident with Breire. After looking at it now, yes, that was dirty.
I dunno - Ovechkin plays on the edge all the time - and sometimes he does cross that line.
