Luongo is great but for $8m/yr, he is not worth it.

none of them bring more to the table then Luongo, although they might bring a lesser price tag, the quality of player you would get with that additional money is negligible wether that would push you over the edge or win you that many more games than Luongo would win you | Quote:

A goaltender's stats are 99% his own... cup success depends on the whole team. | Take it easy Soundy. All I said was Lu and Nabokov hasn't been to the big show yet. I never said he was useless. Or that the team around them failed. I only pointed out the obvious, which is that they've never been to the cup finals.
Hondaracer, if we traded away Lu for say 5 first round picks and brought up Schnider, with the additional 7M in cap space, you don't think we can sign one or 2 players that would make a difference on the current team? Even if we only got 3 first round picks, that is a lot of potenital players that will could keep the team very competitive for years to come.
Look at Cam Ward. His stanley cup wins came with him as a rookie who had shown how good he could be in the world juniors. LAst year and this past year, Osgood was only making $1.45M and $1.1M respectively.
You don't need the world's best goalie to get to the cup finals. You need a good goalie (which all NHL goalies should be) and a good team in front of him. As much as those NHL stats are individula stats, the team in front of him will also affect those numbers.
You don't believe that, just look at Kipper's numbers since the 03/04 season. I don't think he has gotten any worse with age, but the team in front of him has changed.
I'm sure a good goalie like Lu is gonna win you the odd game or three, but that is not enough to the cup. Let's see, one mental slip in game 5 against the ducks let Scott Neidimeyer score from the blue line with a simple dump in.
Oh wait, 7 goals against the hawks?
Or maybe he isn't as good as everyone thinks he is. Positionally he is sound, and he does have a reputation that would make every average player grip their sticks just a little harder trying to pick those corners, but we have seen that he is weak playing the puck, not as strong in the shoot outs.

i have always thought and still think that giving Luongo the 'C' was a huge mistake. let him worry about his duties and his game only.

I really wonder what goes on in Sundins head. The season is about to start and he's playing games again. Like buddy, make a decision already or hang up your skates.
And I'm pretty sure Gillis will do whatever it takes to keep Lu in Vancouver, the obvious question that has to be asked is if Lu does stay what happens to Schneider and how much is he really worth on the open market.

Don't get my wrong guys. I like Luongo but he's over rated. Stats mean nothing if you can't back it up in the playoffs where it counts. I can look at post #1612 all day but rookies such as carm ward and other "lesser known goaliers" have able to win a stanley cups. Luongo isnt worth 8 mil.

Luongo will be getting under 8 if he signs an extension guaranteed, he's not stupid he understands that he cannot handcuff a team with that kind of a salary if he's determined to win long term

His playoff stats for a very few games are in the stratosphere of playoff goaltenders. He could post a 1.00 GAA for every playoff game and it wouldn't matter if that one goal is the only one scored between both teams. The other 20 guys still gotta put up more points than he allows.
Yeah, Ward has a Cup in his rookie year... playing in front of a trapping team. Does that make him "better" than Lu? What does he have since then? ONE other playoff appearance (08-09). 8 wins in 18 games and a second-round exit. Ooo. Doesn't prove a thing. Kipper? ONE run to the big dance, four early exits since. Ooo, also overrated. Nabokov? Eight playoff appearances, NO cups, and a whack of first- and second-round exits. Oooo, way overrated.

I don't understand why everyones jumping and arguing that Lu isn't a great goaltender. You cannot compare him to a guy like Osgood. Reason being is that Osgood has a really bad reptuation for flopping during the season. Albeit he is somehow able to elevate his game when it matters, but at one point during this season was he not the backup in DET? Kipper isn't as sharp as he used to be, but he's still a good goalie. Luongo is a goaltender that I think has the ability to make players think twice about what they're gonna do against him. Yes he let in 7 goals in the final game against the Hawks this past spring, but is that entirely his fault to blame? You guys keep forgetting that this is a team game, and the goalie is a big a part of the team as your #1 scorer. Just take a look at Washington. Theodore wasn't that great when it mattered, but they had a team infront of him that could take it away. That's the one big peice that we're missing to this puzzle we call the Canucks is a team that is able to just take the game and run with it.
I think you guys should just give the guy a break and get off his dick. Will you guys still be saying all this stuff if we had won the cup? Will you guys still say all this stuff if we win a cup next year? I think not, so just get off the guy and stop being a bunch of bandwagoners.

The Score magazine has the Flames winning the cup and the Canucks finishing 7th and the Sedin's getting 95 points each.

What do you not understand about someone saying he's not god like or he is overrated? Is there no in between being shitty and god-like? Nobody is saying he is a bad goaltender. He is great, but not the best there ever was (not yet anyway).
And don't use the fucking word, "Bandwagoner." Ever. Most of the people here are pretty hard core. You say this stuff because you have others to back you up? I have respect for guys like Soundy, Hondaracer, CRS, Noir, Nodnarb, and the others who post in here with their VIEWS.
Get off his dick? You gay or something? Most peole say get of his back or get off his case........... get off his dick? WOW!!!!!!

LOL @ Flames winning the cup. Please. I still remember the TSN and Sportsnet panels licking Flame nuts during the trade deadline when they got Jokinen and the experts saying the trade was going to send the Flames deep into the post season. Most rosters look good on paper but it's a whole different story when it comes to team chemistry.

He was an amazing goalie when he was still making $5 - $6 million range. But his asking price is in the $8 million, Crosby type range. Some people think he provides the same impact, some people (despite agreeing that he provides a significant contribution) cannot provide the same impact.
After all, to win games, you can't just keep the pucks out of your own net, you gotta get your own pucks in. But hey, Roy's carried his team on his back, so has Brodeur. It's really up to Luongo to find where he truly measures and not let his supporters determine it in his stead.

Keeping Luongo is important I think. I want the cup now. Every year it seems like the next season(or few seasons to come) will be good because of prospects... but it never seems to happen.
If Luongo is gone and Schneider plays, I don't think Canucks will get far this year. I don't really think that sacrifice is worth it... But we'll see how much Lu asks for anyway.
