I saw Wellwood a few days ago too, he might have lost a few pounds but he's still not in shape. He might be down to 180, but its 180lbs of chubb and not muscle, you can tell he doesn't hit the gym much at all.
oh, and the bastard stole half my lobster poutine at Glowbal, god damn Wellfeed strikes again, hahaha

Oh don't worry, he's not fat, just kinda chubb and not muscular at all, kinda like an average joe that works 9-5 and doesn't workout. Not fat but nowhere near how a pro athlete should be built.
Edler is looking pretty jacked tho, maybe he's trying to fill the void left by Ohlund, now Ohlie was all muscle and probably the strongest Canuck.

When I read about 7Seven's encounter with Wellfed, this was the first thing that popped into my head...
Its nice hear to about Edler though. Mini-ohlund has some pretty big shoes to fill this season

FML! hahaha | Doesn't really matter. The guy is still a great hockey player. I'm sure Raymond's well fit but a chubby Wellwood could still outplay him.
And FYI,
NHL's best scorer is neither a Spartan himself. He has a little chubbiness himself too.
Gut
Slight Love Handles
What really irks me is that despite his contributions, people still can't get past the fitness issue and some fans will always have a misconception with the way hockey works. Such as:
*** Fitness = Hockey Skill.
*** Whoever wears the letter C on their jersey completely alters the team's success.
*** A "Ra-Ra" speech suddenly defatigues a team
It's funny sometimes when I see people apply what they learn in the movies IRL.
(No shot to you CRS. Just commenting on misplaced criticism)

Such as: | I used to play hockey so I know what you mean, the two greatest players ever were never really muscular, Gretzky was skinny and Lemieux didn't have much muscle mass, but both where dedicated to training. I think why some ppl rag on Wellwood so much is that while its fine not to be jacked up, its his attitude about training, he just refuses to because its too much effort. He is a pretty skilled hockey player but imagine how much better he'd be if his cardio was better or he put on a bit of muscle, the potential is there just not the effort. He still is a very skilled player tho.
hahaha oh and while Raymond maybe fit, if anyone has seen him in person, he is tiny lol. Now he needs to hit the weight room and gain some strength so he won't keep getting knocked down.

Or something along those lines?
And Noir, It's all good, we're all just talking. |

Players used the first 20 games to get back into playing shape. Lafleur would play a shift, then head down the hallway to have a smoke before his next shift.
Today's players are stronger and faster, especially with the advances to the equipment and sticks so they shoot faster/harder and hit harder.
Players like Dave Andreychuk was forced to retire because he just couldn't keep up with the speed of the new NHL. Joe Sakic pretty much said the same thing when he retired this offseason.
But that being said, I still like Wellwood a lot because he is just that talented of a hockey player. But if he doesn't change a few things, he will be forever stuck on teh second/third line.

Out of all my years in hockey though, I've seen and played along many great players. Some physically fit, some not. But one thing common to all those great players was that they weren't great in hockey because they work out, its because they've played hockey a lot. A lot more than your average person, even a lot more than your usual hockey whore.
So I can see where Wellwood is coming from. His hands and hockey sense aren't going to develop more if only he could bench press more, do curls more. And hitting, chasing and the checking (a la Burrows/Kesler) type is not really his game. His game more follows along the lines of the Sedins' type IMO; passing & playmaking.

I mean, look at the Linden the year before he retired and the Linden at his prime. Completely different players.

Gordo Howe was able to play into his 50's because of the speed of the game was that slow.
Andreychuck was playing and scoring 20 goals a season pre-lock out. After the lock out, he no longer could keep up with the speed because players were not allowed to clutch and grab. I doubt his speed decreased by that much in 2 years, though he was pretty old by that time.

He just parked his ass in front of the goalie and was one of the best at "garbage" goals. This is coming from an Andreychuk fan who grew up watching him on the Sabres in his prime.

The thing is, Gretzky was in the gym training cardio and core muscles on his own time, Wellwood won't because he doesn't like putting in the effort.
