Shirokov sounds like a winner... a mini Ovechkin-like character.

From Russia, with love for NHL
Sergei Shirokov turned down big bucks in his homeland to toil for the Canucks
By Iain MacIntyre, Vancouver SunSeptember 10, 2009
It isn't the $500,000 tax-free salary he left behind in Russia that worries Sergei Shirokov, but the 15 feet of ice he sacrificed to follow his National Hockey League dream to Canada.
And Wednesday, even that wasn't so bad.
"First period, I look; it is small rink," the 23-year-old from Moscow said after his first game on the narrower North American ice sheet. "Packed. Many guys. Second period, is okay."
Shirokov was more than okay. His patience, skill and vision with the puck were obvious as the left winger set up a pair of goals and numerous other scoring chances in the Vancouver Canuck prospects' 4-3 victory against the University of Alberta Golden Bears.
And since Shirokov's initial foray into the Canadian hockey heartland didn't curb his enthusiasm for his remarkable decision to join the Canucks, nothing will.
Having fought fabled Central Red Army in arbitration to win his release from the Kontinental Hockey League, then signing a two-way, entry-level National Hockey League contract with the Canucks that will pay Shirokov just $65,000 if he spends his rookie season in the minors, the Russian made his North American debut in front of a few hundred fans at a university arena while playing against student-athletes.
"It's okay," he smiled. "I go on ice, Vancouver Canucks jersey. I'm happy.
"KHL is good money. But play at NHL is better. Better level. I want to play in Vancouver. Russia, it's big money. But NHL is better league. I say to coach: I have to go NHL. I go."
He came in August and hopes to be in Vancouver when the NHL season begins in October. The likelihood of that increased significantly when Canuck veteran Pavol Demitra revealed this week he'll be out at least another six weeks due to a slow recovery from shoulder surgery.
There seems little doubt that Shirokov, one of only two Russian players to leave the KHL for entry-level NHL deals this summer, has the skills to play for the Canucks. There is a question about his size: 5-10 and 165 pounds.
He began to answer that question Wednesday, when after getting run over by Alberta assistant captain Eric Hunter in the first period, Shirokov crushed the former Prince George Cougar a period later with the game's biggest hit.
Shirokov does not fit the Russian stereotype. Even with his limited English, he is engaging and personable.
"He's got a smile on all the time," Manitoba Moose coach Scott Arniel, who ran the Canuck bench Wednesday, said after the game. "When he got hit [by Hunter], he came back to the bench and had a big grin. And when he went out and got a big hit, he came back and had an even bigger smile.
"He's doing whatever it takes to get his shot. That shows the character of the kid. If he doesn't end up in Vancouver, he's excited about playing for the Manitoba Moose. He has already checked out schools for his girlfriend, both in Vancouver and Manitoba. You can tell he's the type of kid who wants to be in the NHL and, however long it takes him, he's going to do that."
Shirokov convinced Canuck general manager Mike Gillis during a summer phone call that he was serious about leaving the KHL, something few young players have done during the long-festering dispute between the NHL and Russian Federation over transfer fees.
Gillis gave Shirokov the 2006 rookie maximum of $850,000 for this season, but he has to make the Canucks to earn it. If, as expected, Shirokov plays in the American League with the Moose, he gets $65,000. That's the deal. And he has to start training camp with the Canuck prospects, mostly raw rookies.
"You can tell he's thinking a little bit ahead of some of the kids he's playing with," Gillis said Wednesday. "He's got great hands. He put the puck on a guy's stick in the slot four or five times and got a couple of assists. I think it was a good start for him.
"He didn't know he was going to be able to come over until very late in the summer, so mentally and emotionally, I don't think it was in his head. But now that he's here, he seems to be getting better every day."
Shirokov had 17 goals and 41 points in 56 games last season in Russian, where he was considered one of the KHL's rising stars.
"He was a top-six player," Stan Smyl, Gillis' special assistant, said. "He was always on the ice."
Smyl was dispatched last February to Moscow for 10 days. He watched Shirokov play four times. He and the Canucks' Russian scout, Sergei Chibisov, had lunch and dinner with Shirokov.
"He asked me 101 questions -- about players, about the league, about Vancouver," Smyl said. "He asked about our depth. He wanted to know what the minors are like. His girlfriend wants to go to school, so they asked about UBC. He told me he wanted to come.
"That commitment [to play in North America] makes a big difference. He has the skill and ability, too, but he has a passion to play hockey here."

Comrie held out on the Oilers, so the Oilers worked out a trade with Anaheim to send Comrie to the Ducks for Corey Perry and a 1st round pick, Lowe then demanded Comrie to repay part of his bonuses to the Oilers at which point Comrie told Lowe to go fuck himself haaahahaha

Anybody hear something about a Trevor Linden autograph signing for Saturday in Surrey? My friend said she saw a thread on it on CDC but I haven't been able to find anything online. I don't want to drive all the way to Surrey to find out it's a hoax.

Thanks, saw the one about the Monday signing and I'm planning to attend. I'm not sure if I want to go to the Saturday one because my friend and I found out about it from CDC but there's no other sources that can confirm this. CDC's not the most reliable and for the previous Trevor Linden signings I've been to there has been some press on it. I find it funny there isn't anything this time around and the signing is two days away.

CIBC has used Linden for branch openings for the past half a year. The one in Surrey should be legit. Call the branch to find out.
