I think I want to try a new barber. Need a good fade cut and a beard trim for around $25 because if I trim my own, I screw it up to the point where I need to shave it off. I'm in Surrey, but I can probably do New West/Burnaby if it's worth it. I think there was an RS'er who had his own place, but I'm not too sure now since the post was old.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Soho, Richmond, Pacific Plaza at the corner of Garden City and Cambie.
$26 + tips.
There is only 1 stylist there for guys (Husband cuts, Wife collects money and keeps place tidy).
It's a very modern location, and he will do whatever you want him to style your hair as.
Takes about 30 minutes, with 5 to 7 minutes of EXTRA gentle and enjoyable hair washing (twice, once before and once after).
No water will splash on your face, and you can doze off if you want.
Danny, the hair stylist, is my stylist for the last... oh... 4+ years.

Not sure if it's been mentioned before, but I got my last haircut at Alen's in Richmond, recommended from my brother. There are 2 barbers there, Alen and Saaid (sp?) and they seem to specialize in men's haircuts. My hair is super thick and a pain to cut, and he had it down to muscle memory, and does it fast and precise. I asked for short-medium, but it was a bit too short for me. Maybe I'll try a medium length cut next time. Super nice guy, paid $16 plus a $4 tip for a quick and nice cut.
Kind of a long drive for me, going from East Van to Steveston, but I went on a weekday morning so it was nice and quiet, both on the roads and in the shop.

Because I'm too lazy to make the trip down to my usual barber, I just trim my hair weekly. 5 min at a time. All you need is a scissor.

I tried many places in this thread tsubaki, joyce hair design, amd dz hair salon. i really liked joyce hair design until the lady who cut my hair returned to Korea recently. In those places it really depends who you get. Now I pay a bit more at Misako Hair in Burnaby. i love it there because of the care and attention to detail that you get from a japanese place AND they still use razors. I am not a fan of those 50-$60 scissor only hair cuts that are all over downtown.

It isn't that hard, but it takes a couple times to get it the way you like it.
Just put news paper down and the clean up is easy.

Does anyone know a good place if I don't know what hairstyle I want? I want something new and different, that I can maintain as well, do not want an SS cut/quiff/pompadour/etc. I was thinking about Jenny's in Richmond which was posted a while ago, but I really don't know I haven't the slightest of ideas when I walk into a barber shop of what I want nowadays lol.

If they can get it right, why not spend 30$. I'll admit I spend 36$ a haircut w/ tip, but I usually go every 4 months, and every time it's different. It's not about being hip, Its about having a really good relationship with your barber, and them knowing what you want/should do.
Trust me, I've had a haircut at a place where I was paying 9-15$ a haircut (which was fantastic)but when they shut down, I had to find someone else. It's worth every penny if you find a place that can get it right. My barber is pretty hilarious so it's worth the money. Experience > Cost IMO.

hmm.. maybe im not hip enough? | if you like what you get for the amount you pay, good on you. I know for my standards and taste, I wouldn't go anywhere near those 10 dollar places that use the clipper to do everything from sides, back to even the top... I don't think those places are even trained to use scissors....

I used to go to this place on kingsway for $10... Then I stopped going because I moved, but when I came back to visit and got my haircut, she ruined my hair just because 3 "walk-in" clients came in and she rushed my haircut. I kept pushing her to fix it but then she kicked me out.
Never going back there again.
Now I pay $20 for a haircut and it's well worth the money.
Where I live now, I cut my own hair by using a small mirror, clippers and those scissors with the comb in it. |
