| Mouse traps & cats
If you're in this forum, you're most likely a pet lover...
So My wife hates the fact that I line the top of our leather couch and kitchen counters/stove with mouse traps. I have done everything to keep the cats off the counters etc but they just keep on doing it. We got the cats 2nd hand and they where allowed to roam freely at there last place of residence and I want this habit gone. Every morning I go check on the traps and about 2-3 of them are snapped. They're not learning even after sore paws. What else to do? If I lock them up they howl and wake the roomies.
Mabye I should find something really sticky so they're stuck there till morning... hrm

I'm surprised they still jump up. Is there a spray that cats don't like you can spray up there?

If you look around, I've heard about pet stores selling mats you can put on the countertops or other surfaces you don't want your cats to jump onto...and there's lots of prickly stubs so it'll feel really uncomfortable for their paws. I find that my cat only jumps up on the counter when there's something there that interests him, so I keep the top clear and he never goes there anymore.
If the mats do not work, then I say you'll just have to learn to live with it. Cats jump and climb and they are smart enough to learn not to do it when you're around, but once you're gone...
On a side note, I probably would cease using the mouse traps. They could do some serious damage in the right places and I'm sure you wouldn't want the extra hassle of vet visits. |

there is a motion sensor spray that you can place on the counter. The other thing is to put something like tin foil on the counters so that when they jump up it slides and they don't like the feel of it. Other then that there are double sided sticky tapes that work well. Is there something else like a tall cat post that they can climb on and perch on? if yes then make this attractive by putting some catnip on it every night before bed. This way the counters become negative and the perch/post become positive.

I'm going to try the tinfoil approach and see if that helps for the time being. Right when we shut our door at night we hear them up on our living room table, once again they got bong water on the floor. They have a lovely 3 perch scratching post... I may just resort to 50 traps across the counter baited with cheese for a week and see how well these guys learn.

I used double sided tape. My cat hated touching the stuff and when his paws got stuck he would flip out and fall off.. haha One time I came home to find him wrapped up in the double sided tape... lol jsut rolling all over the floor

I tried lining the counter-tops with ceyanne pepper... didnt seem to effect him much if at all so I went for a more direct approach. ceyanne hidden inside bugels, nocho cheese and chilli in nice sized ceyanne chunks. Somewhat humerous watching him run around with watering eyes and jump right back up and take another bite. I'm lost for words... I'll give him to the end of the week before he finds his ass booted outside
