Rant: Old People Need to Redo the Driving Test

So I was driving down the Morrey Channel Bridge (Bridge that comes from the airport and turns into Sea Island Way) into Richmond, go across it, and what do i see? I see two old women in a red toyota corolla heading in the wrong direction towards traffic (including myself) passing right past me.

I was quite frustrated...

For those who don't know where that is, its here.

edit: fyi, its a one way street

I think people pass the age of 60/65 should retake their driving test every 2 years or even every year.

i dun think age really matters there's some younger aunties and uncles that are way worst then old people .. my only beef with old people is that they drive slow .. but i also understand that their old and safety will be a priority for them as they can't react as quickly as young people

there are other minorities who are observed practicing poor driving quite a bit more often than the elderly..

Yes, snap a picture of a speeding car and report it!

Ezekiel 25:17. The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you.

Some of these old drivers are so fucking dangerous. Their reaction time and vision just aren't what they used to be. They take forever to park too.

agreed, the potential danger of old ppl is significantly less than young smart asses like myself, no honestly, when my grandma drives she is afraid of everything on the road, when I drive it's GOGOGO!!! I think the cautiousness of old drivers is a nuissance especially when they drive at 30km/h but hey, let it be. Patience is a virtue.

P.S. my grandpa is soon to be 80 and he still drives like a punk...

You know, the fact that those old women are now across the bridge and not on the news make them epic drivers. Probably only second to The Stig.

Even though this thread started as a rant, I don't think we should just focus on the elderly group as there are lots and lots of poor drivers from different age groups. Sometimes it's an old man who pisses you off, sometimes it's a chinese C-lai, and sometimes it's some punkass ricer. I've had encounters with all kinds of people that drive poorly and dangerously. They're a fucking hazard to our society and should learn how to drive properly.

E.g. Today, I was driving around a cul-de-sac to make a U-turn. There was this C-lai tailgating me because I was doing 40km/h. When I was making my U-turn around the cul-de-sac, the C-lai tried to pass me from my left, which is the direction I was heading. Almost caused an accident, and she wouldn't let my car go through when our cars were head to head, so I got out of my car with my baton and she got scared and drove off

Give the police authority to confiscate licenses and force retests.
Increase the requirements to pass the test.
Increase the costs of a license.
Increase the gas tax to pay for more public transportation infrastructure.

My grandfather drove into his 80s fine, yet my mother will be hard pressed to drive into her 60s.
There's lots of new immigrants that are unfamiliar with driving a car, nevermind in a busy city. They need much stricter training/licensing requirements.

i dont know, seeing a person heading in the wrong direction (for a good amount of time) is pretty serious, especially when there are 5 signs telling the driver NOT to turn there. I think that some old people are so lost when they're driving... (mind you that these were two elderly women who looked like they were in their seventies, probably high jacked their grandson's corolla from the old folks home when he was visiting one of them)

^^Exactly. A lot of immigrants drive the way they do back in their country... cutting off cars, changing lanes and turning without signaling, blocking the passing lane, etc.

If they can legally drive on B.C. roads, they should drive properly like the majority of us.

you know, the majority of people with driver's license in China BOUGHT them. So the reason why they drive like that is obvious, they never learned to drive properly in the first place.

And i totally agree that old people should redo the driving test every couple of years. I have seen a similar situation when a C lai in a S550 went southbound on a northbound highway, with a big ass barricade in between too.

Quote:
An elderly man who drove his car about nine kilometres on the wrong lanes of highways 427 and 401 is safe after he was stopped by provincial police in northwest Toronto.

The car was first spotted driving northbound in the southbound lanes of Highway 427 near Burnhamthorpe Road before dawn on Monday.

Ontario Provincial Police fielded numerous calls about the vehicle as it then headed eastbound in the westbound express lanes of Highway 401, passing Dixon Road and Islington Avenue before finally being stopped near Weston Road.

Police said the man hadn't been drinking, but appeared confused. The man's family arrived on the scene and his car was towed off the highway to a nearby parking lot.
It's so time to re-evaluate mandatory driving examinations for elderly drivers.
