Tokyo Trip Planning...

Hey guys and girls,

Going to be spending four days in Tokyo (Shinjuku to be specific) with the wife. We're staying at the Shinjuku Washington Hotel.

Never been to Tokyo before (or Japan for that matter) and am not going to do the whole tour package thing so I'll need help to figure out what to do there (you know, besides visiting the giant Gundam statue).

Hints, ideas, etc?

Thanks!

so i hear. well, i'll be coming from singapore and malaysia, if that's any consolation, so perhaps i won't notice too much of a difference between really fucking hot and really fucking hot with a touch of humidity.

Other then the price of a round-trip airfare, how much do I need to budget my expenses for traveling in Japan (Tokyo, Osaka.. just the major cities).

for ex., staying at a love hotel, capsule bed, etc.

Winters are cold as hell too! Especially if you go north. Tokyo is way colder than Vancouver in the winter.

I'm currently in my second week and in Nagoya. I spent my first week in Tokyo and it was frikkin hot as hell. I recommend shorts but I wore jeans and I was fine most of the time. In my opinion, a day of exploring will set you back at least $5-10 in drinks from vending machines/convenience stores. I visited all the major spots in Tokyo but surprisingly, I enjoyed Ueno the most. Just exploring Ameyoko-cho and Ueno park was very worth it. If you want to see hot girls, they are everywhere but particularly in Harajuku. Saw the giant gundam in Odaiba which was awesome and exploring Odaiba itself is very interesting. In general, I didn't take a guidebook nor a map and I don't think its needed. All I had with me was a subway map. I just wing'd it as I went and had some particular attractions in my head ahead of time. There's too much for me to say about Japan so if you have any questions, I can answer them.

I went during the summer and the heat and humidity almost killed me. I was literally walking 1 block, buying a drink from the vending machine and walking another block and buying another drink.

I went again last year during November and the weather was perfect, like a cool summer day in Vancouver.

This site was very useful for sightseeing spots. Also includes maps of the major Tokyo districts and other major cities of Japan (Osaka, Kyoto etc)

It's pretty warm here in Tokyo. But then again, having come from Malaysia and Singapore, it wasn't too much of a shock. Last full day of Tokyo tomorrow. We're off to the Tsujiki Fish Market in the morning, then off to Ginza for more shopping then back down to Odaiba to catch the Gundam Statue, among other things.

Been getting by pretty well with no Japanese whatsoever. Baka iten janaiyo!
