Find an S2K if you're considering a RHD Supra. I still dont see why anyone would want a RHD car to drive here.

toyota86 07-13-2009 03:54 PM

if you are looking into a rhd supra, get a 95+ rz from japan. make sure it is optioned out to have the big brakes, no t-top, recaros. its rz so 6 speed is a must.

all the so called rhd ones imported here right now ive seen are garbage. ugly body kits, shitty condition, etc. best if you search for one yourself from japan. i'd say if you want a supra, wait a year or so.

good maintenance mods to have would be upgraded turbos to non-ceramic ones and a v161. a novelty option i would get for sure if i was looking for one would be oem the electronic front lip spoiler.

2jz-gte are reliable engines. they are a lot easier and simplier to work on than the rb26s. ive had a 1jz supra and a 2jzge is300 before and daily drove both. no drama at all compared to the rb26 i have now. haha.

as for s2k. get a ap2 and a hard top. some clubs dont let you run convertibles on the track and a cage of any sort will most likely require you to remove the soft top from the car to make room. cage + hardtop so you can daily drive it and not worry about your stuff getting stolen if you park it.

ilvtofu 07-13-2009 04:10 PM

^you can't have a 95+ because they aren't old enough I think

Read the posts, they said they found a nice one in good condition

the twin CTs in the 2jz already has the steel wheels.
It's the 1jz that has the ceramics

unnamed1 07-13-2009 04:16 PM

sweet more terrible advice.

you're telling him to replace the v160 for v161 because it's better for maintenance?
way to waste $4500 USD for a brand new tranny..
only difference from a v160 to v161 is the gearing ratios.

the only way i would upgrade to steel turbos is if the ceramic turbos are blown.
its not worth it to upgrade to USDM/CAD steel spec turbos if nothing is wrong with the ceramic turbos.

I would say, S2000. Supra is gonna drink gas like crazy.

Also should look at insurance for those 2 cars, i think supra might be higher tho.

insurance on the supra will be a couple hundred dollars cheaper compared to the s2k under the same coverage....

Blue92 07-13-2009 05:42 PM

^ I find that interesting... Get an S2000. There are 80,000,000 nice ones available in the states if you can't find any here.

4doorVIP 07-13-2009 05:51 PM

Go with the Supra. For a daily it has 2 extra seats, and a shit load more trunk (hatch) space. The 2JZ is a very powerful and reliable motor. You can hit 400 crank horse with a very low budget, and run it hard all day long without a glitch. Just keep ontop of oil and plug changes. The Supra is not a difficult vehicle to work on, any mechanic should be fine - remember this car is atleast 15 years old now.

That was a supposed "advertised" limit between the major manufacturers with cars pushing 280. True power is usually estimated. For all that we know, a perfect stock MkIV might have had 300-310PS.

As for the topic at hand, I'm undecided, both are solid cars, but the S2K is hot, and the Supra is a brute.

tofu1413 07-13-2009 06:39 PM

tough choice........

but as a daily driver, a near stock supra... would be nice. more liveable too! just some wear and tear items would be costly... 2jz is known to be quite robust luckily.

Renthal 07-13-2009 11:24 PM

supra for sure,
I have an 89, and am in the market for an Mark 4, buy one, baby it, and love it. end of story.

JSALES 07-14-2009 12:07 AM

i'd go with the supra, don't really like hondas

impactX 07-14-2009 04:10 AM

Where's Jasons2000

Marioo1991 07-14-2009 06:16 AM

Maybe I should just get an S2K and then supercharge it.

hk20000 07-14-2009 07:45 AM

^ that would cost the same as getting a Supra and mod it to like 450bhp.

Renthal 07-14-2009 07:47 AM

maybe these will sway your decision...

I KNOW that these supras are modded to the nuts, but it gives you an idea of the potential!

hk20000 07-14-2009 08:27 AM

haha sweeet that Supra is doing burnouts on the dyno!

as long as you go with rotorex

ilvtofu 07-14-2009 02:04 PM

But then u lose the reliability and livability of the supra

If it is anyways

monkeywrench 07-14-2009 03:04 PM

go with the TT supra and you will never look at a honda again. ever.

mas604 07-14-2009 05:30 PM

If you think its overprice then i'd rethink your decision looks like your on a budget supras are reliable but if something breaks its expensive to fix. Its also a gas guzzler. Also because your considering rhd you might want to consider the resale as most rhd just sit there. I sold my LHD supra tt fairly quick as demand for those were high even being auto...just something to think about down the road if you were forced to sell it.

BTW If i had to choose id choose a supra all over again. It was a blast to drive and the looks you get in it... undeniably one of the most sought out car and the attention is well deserved.

SpuGen 07-14-2009 06:07 PM

Supra.

Faster
One of the best engines Toyota has ever made (Next to the 4AGZE, 3SGTE, 1UZ)
Sounds better
Looks better
Actually has a trunk.

billboa 07-14-2009 06:25 PM

supra all the way.

s2k is newer but if nething breaks or if you mod it the parts are VERY expensive

prelude_prince 07-14-2009 11:28 PM

Supra definately. Assuming you're going to mod it, you might look at some of the many differences between USDM and JDM MKIVs though.

While everyone knows its easy to extract power out of the 2JZs, The JDM MKIVs will take more effort (money) than the USDM ones.
