China and Taiwan Leaders Exchange Letters for the First Time in 60 Years

BEIJING, July 27 -- Hu Jintao, top leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC), sent a congratulatory message on Monday to Taiwan's Ma Ying-jeou, who was elected chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT) Sunday, sources from the CPC Central Committee said.

Hu, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, said in the message that he hoped the two political parties could continue to push forward the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, deepen mutual political trust, keep working for the interests of compatriots across the Strait, and rejuvenate the Chinese nation.

In his reply to Hu's message, Ma expressed his gratitude to Hu's congratulation, saying that cross-Strait relations had embarked on a road of peaceful development and mutual prosperity through joint efforts based on the 1992 consensus.

The two parties needed to keep on working together under the principles of facing reality, building mutual trust, laying aside disputes and creating a win-win situation, Ma said in the reply.

The two parties should also make efforts to consolidate peace across the Taiwan Strait, restore regional stability, and push forward cross-Strait development and prosperity, Ma said.

Ma Ying-jeou was elected KMT chairman Sunday in a landslide victory, taking 93.87 percent of party votes.

Ma won Taiwan's leadership election in March last year and was inaugurated in May 2008. He had previously served as chairman of the KMT from July 2005 to February 2007.

I like how they became all buddie buddie with china suddenly after the pan-green was in power from 2000-2008.

I won't STFU until China disarms all ICBM's currently threatening the island.

Here are some food for thought, Why would China launch an attack on Taiwan when Taiwan will probably become another Chinese province 10 to 15 years down the road. The last thing you have to worry are about both side getting into a war. There are other things at play here which you should be much more concerned such as Taiwan being too dependent on Mainland's investment to expand its economy.

Isn't China one of the worlds superpowers? This whole thing is like beef between a super huge buff gangster guy and a super short skinny nerdy guy. The big buff guy being china, and wanting taiwan to be its friend.

Agreed, but why the fuck does China still need 900+ missiles pointed at the island then?

I don't even know why I bother replying to these threads.

Most of the time people are just joining 'fuck tw' bandwagon without even knowing half of the facts nor have they at least attempting to see it through the two different POVs.

Yeah, let's just bend over and give into the black-hearted society where trust was thrown out the window many centuries ago.

culturally, and nationally Taiwanese, but blood and genetics, chinese.

i find taiwanese nationalists often get ethnicity and nationality mixed up, and so do most people that debate in this topic.

btw, i'm taiwanese, but i acknowledge that i'm of chinese decent, and blood.

PEOPLE
Taiwan has a population of 23 million. More than 18 million, the "native" Taiwanese, are descendants of Chinese who migrated from Fujian and Guangdong Provinces on the mainland, primarily in the 18th and 19th centuries. The "mainlanders," who arrived in Taiwan after 1945, came from all parts of mainland China. About half a million indigenous peoples inhabit the mountainous central and eastern parts of the island and are believed to be of Malayo-Polynesian origin. Of Taiwan's total population, approximately one million, or 4.4%, currently reside in mainland China.

HISTORY
Taiwan's indigenous peoples, who originated in Austronesia and southern Asia, have lived on Taiwan for 12,000 to 15,000 years. Significant migration to Taiwan from the Chinese mainland began as early as A.D. 500.

Like I've previously said in your old threads, I don't deny that once my ancestors are from China.

Some just prefer being recognized by their nationality.

When Korea was detracted from China, were you still calling them Chinese? No. Yet many of them have the same blood and genes as those in Northern China.
