| Possible Porsche 997 hybrid!! http://www.nextautos.com/spied-possi...5067&nid=39776
I think that electric/hybrid cars are a short-term reality, and the end of the dedicated ICE is on the horizon. (albiet a long ways away)
Image going to a race, or track day, or autocross, and the only sounds you hear are the squeals of the tires and the whoooosh of the air as the car flies by.
It's going to happen people...
I wonder when it'll make it's way to airplanes!

Well, I drive our new 2010 Fusion hybrids every so often, and honestly, I LOVE them. The CVT is kinda weird to get used to, but the electric motor does have 100% of it's torque immediately available when you touch the gas pedal.
I love the idea of a stealthy quiet car. Think of how nice it will be in 50 years when you're an old cranky kermudgeon and you can go to sleep at night easy because the cars driving by do not keep you awake.
The 24 hours of LeMans diesel race cars are suuuuuper quiet - so quiet in fact that the drivers can hear sounds they've never heard before and can improve their driving because of that.

I'm pretty sure whatever they come up with will be better than anything on the market - and I'm pretty sure they're working with VW/Audi/Lambo as well.
And right now Ford's hybrid system is kicking Toyota's butt!

Yeah I think it'll have really strange weight distribution... maybe you can finally get a 911 that doesn't handle like a traditional 911 does. (Jeremy Clarkson will LOVE that!)
Actually it'll probably handle like a 944 - big weight up front (engine) big weight in back (gearbox/tranny/diff) and perfect 50/50 balance.

I think it's premature to say it'll be boring.
I wouldn't call the Tesla boring.

They should build a Boxter with a small displacement H6-twin charge FSI engine!
(kind of what vw did with the 1.4 engine, but with 6 cylinders?)

Hopefully hybrid technology in the future will improve to a point that gives enough sportiness for super car companies to use them without compromising performance.

as I read the article about the porsche hybrid, it's not the Prius/Insight hybrid...
it's more like the Escalade hybrid which 90% of the power is from the gas engine and 10% of electric to reduce emission.

Ford never actually 'copied' or 'borrowed' Toyota's hybrid technology. What DID happen, was that Toyota already had patents on certain designs that Ford also came up with and needed to use in it's own hybrid systems. So Ford basically said, ok, if you let us use your patents, you can use ours. But the fact is that Ford had been developing their own 'in-house' hybrid systems at the same time as Toyota. http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/07...a-hybrid-syst/ Quote:
...in an op-ed piece published in the Wall Street Journal, Alan Reynolds of the Cato Institute starts by making a few decent points about fuel taxation and fuel economy rules. Unfortunately, he undermines himself with some blatant errors and misinformation. In discussing how Detroit automakers will deal with new fuel efficiency requirements, he makes the all-too-common mistake of referring to Ford's hybrid system as licensed from Toyota ("Similarly, Ford has the Toyota-licensed hybrid Fusion and will soon produce the European Ford Fiesta in Mexico").
The reality is that Ford independently developed its own hybrid system at the same time Toyota was doing its own. The basic architecture of both systems is the same and both are based on the concepts developed and patented by TRW engineers in the late 1960s. When Ford introduced the Escape Hybrid, Toyota went after the Blue Oval for infringing on its patents. Ford had patents of its own on the technology that Toyota was using. Eventually, the two companies reached a cross-licensing agreement that gives both companies the right to build their own systems. Such cross-licensing agreements are common in these kinds of cases, but Ford did not use the Toyota hybrid system. The only other company that uses Toyota's system is Nissan for its Altima hybrid, and they actually buy hardware from Toyota. We continue deconstructing Reynolds' arguments after the jump... | |

More like 998 and it will probably be KERS type system? ie provide an extra boost as needed.
Porsche is very unlikely to go with a CVT since it can't handle the power.
The best indicatioin is look at what ZF does... since Porsche always follows ZF eg PDK, tiptronic etc.

The batteries for hybrid vehicles are fucking heavy and should never make their way into a sports car.

So after being all Porsched out from this month`s Road and Track, its quite surprising to see this.
With Toyota's relative long term myouri(good fortune), I have to say its going to be quite an uphill battle although ive never driven in a hybrid before.
I have to say though, as an automobile enthusiast Ive come to the conclusion that Toyota's menboko(honor/face) has got to be questionable.
Im ready for change. I remember back in 97 when Porsche introduced its new water-cooled engine. It was definitely the biggest event that month for me personally. Hell, I almost walked out of the store with it..
Airplanes? Early French radial engine??
