| iPhone Nav and Data cost question.
I just got my iphone and had few q.
I did search and it did not turn up anything
anyways, before I got my iPhone, I did call fido and had all "data service" blocked. they called it 'iPhone data block' or something
however my 'Location Services' still work and I've been using it alot using Navigon.
buddy of mine was telling me how I would be hit with HUGE data bill for using Nav software even with data blocked.
is this true?? my phone still shows 0kb/0kb for both received/sent data.
it is jailbroken/unlocked if it makes any difference.
thanks in advance

Your buddy's dumb. Navigon has it's on database and uses no data. He's probably thinking of Google maps which requires data.

no no I was referring to "Location Service"
according to Fido rep. "Location Service" still uses data packet and I'll get billed for it.
is this true?

Location Service just enables the built in GPS. I guess it's possible to have data packets go through if it's using the 3G to triangulate your posistion. I've manually disabled the data on my iphone and it still works just fine.

APN Editor from Cydia.
Or if your phone isn't jailbroken you can just download the Apple Iphone Configuration Utility. Create a dummy profile with invalid APN settings and upload to your phone.

Locations service is strictly for GPS only, it doesn't run any data... unless your using data for google maps.
Get Navigon / Sygic for North America if you want true GPS, its all offline data which means you do not need a data plan to use on the road.
