is A/C pump expensive?

MB dealership says my AC pump is not working according to their digital scanner, they want to charge me $2000 + labour for it. So I went to some garages, it's cheaper, only $420 + labour but cannot guarantee the replacement will make the AC works again, I have to take the risk it could be something else is broke.

WTF is AC pump anyway? is it the same AC compressor?

A/C pump is an A/C compressor yes.

And I'm assuming you are typing in HKD... that's too much money for an A/C compressor even from Mercedes.

the reason why there's no guarantee from garages is that they are going to get it from Kam Tin.... Mine was from Kam Tin too it's still running in this hot hot summer in Van so fingers crossed u'll be fine.

you can't drive in HK without a working A/C pump, even the buses are all A/C'd...

your comparing a used ac compressor at some joe blow shop as opposed to brand new unit from mercedes benz and mercedes benz warranty for install and parts.

its a gamble.

well, I looked it up online, it seems like a new unit goes around $300usd at whole sale price with warranty.

Warranty is not an issue, the problem could be else where as I mention. Maybe the control unit is dead. =/ I don't know.

Any mechanic that is worth his/her salt will be able to tell you whether the AC compressor is gone, without the Star computer.

The problem is access, you will need to get the front member, rad etc off to get to it.. They can't diagnose unless you commit to the fix (so there can be something else). Since the front is off, so you mind as well do all the belts, water pump, thermostat, hoses, check/replace alternator clutch etc while you are at it. (not to mention recharging the AC and replacing that set of filters). That's how the bill gets huge.

If your SLK has the automatic temperature feature you might want to replace the PWM module too.

I won't take it to a shop that is in a small space, since a lot of crap has to come off and you want the front to be properly aligned when it is done.

two shops checked the system, no leak and they can't tell what's wrong with it, even though they claim they are AC specialist. HAHA

It could be the controller or whatever that controls that AC operation. I swear the AC worked perfectly before, but then one day I turned it off, it won't start again. I don't think it is the refrigerant leaking, cause it was COLD all the time. MB has the worst AC design, it turns on whenever you start the car.

I love when people spread misinformation!

Freon is a brand name for R-12, also known as dichlorodifluoromethane. I believe it was last used in cars A/C systems in 1994... The refrigerant in any recent car would be R-134A, aka tetrafluoroethane.. which isn't as harmful to the ozone layer.

However, that said... they're replacing tetrafluoroethane starting in 2011..

if an addition of system pressure gets the system going again you might have a faulty system pressure sensor or that the shop has a broken gauge themselves (unlikely)

start from there. Can't someone scan your Mercedes scanner tool in HK and just run thru the menu for A/C faults?

They should have at least give you a print out of the error code, many things can cause a compressor error and no pressure ie out of coolant is one of them.

I don't think you can call them BSing (yet), it is just you not being thorough.
