| Entertaining but not creative.
I'll start off by saying that I did enjoy the movie. I was engaged and entertained throughout. I won't deny that. And I would recommend it if you like special effects and action.
But it isn't as great a movie as everyone seems to think it is. It isn't just the story that is derivative (a la comparisons to pocahontas and dances with wolves). It isn't just that the dialogue was mechanical and the characters one-dimensional and the actors over-acted. I actually found the "world" not that impressive either.
With a $300 million budget, you'd think they'd spend more time and effort on fleshing out pandora. They created 5 unoriginal alien creatures to inhabit this place: the na'vi people, the big hammerhead rhino, a pterodactyl thing, big ass horses, and hyenas on steroids. an entirely new world with only 5 creatures to inhabit it? You can spot more wildlife at stanley park.
Not only that, but they are not very original designs. They threw a hammerhead shark and a rhino together. Mashed humans and cats together to make the Na'vi. Hulked up some hyenas and gave it an extra set of eyes. They hunt in packs. Horse-like creatures are domesticated and used for military purposes. Floating mountains, plants that seem intelligent? Been there, done that.
If you look at the character designs for Lord of the Rings or Star Wars, not only are they extensive in number and variety but also original in design. There are more fantastically creative creatures in the Tatooine bar scene alone than all of Pandora.
Then there is the Na'vi people themselves. Their culture is completely ripped off of real, existing native tribes past and present. That scene where they sit around the tree to pray, that is straight out of an Indonesian native ritual. Check out the documentary "Baraka" to see that. The rest are Native American stereotypes, even down to their hairstyles.
And finally, the spaceships and weapons were not impressive at all. Big ass exoskeleton robots? C'mon. James Cameron basically did that for Aliens more than 20 years ago, and have been done numerous times since.
I found the lack of innovation in this film very surprising. I was very much looking forward to seeing it and was expecting to be blown away . . . well, I was satisfied, but not blown away. If I was to pick the best special effects epic blockbuster of the last decade, I would pick LOTR. And I'm not even a fan of LOTR.

Titanic made 1.8 billion and Avatar last time I checked was Just over 1 billion. So ^^^ don't count out Avatar just yet. considering its only been a month. Also, It's true Movies in Imax usually get pulled in about a month. But, considering he tremendous amount of sales they are making on this movie. I highly doubt they are going to pull the movie out any time soon. So no worries. I myself am going to wait a few more weeks before trying again.

I think Titanic is the only movie I watched more than once in the theatre...

| In my opinion, there is a take home message to this movie.
It's related to the present situation and relationship between our modern society and the aboriginals. The intensification of globalisation has not only eradicated many smaller cultures and their traditions, but also rapid depletion of the worlds resources such as fossil fuels.
The movie may be portraying the worldly balance that needs to be maintained, in both social and environmental aspects.

Haven't watched it yet, getting turned off by all the hype.
I'm sure the CGI is great, but just not convinced when I hear people saying "ohmygod avatar is the most amazing movie EVAR".
Cause c'mon, really?
Willing to bet James Cameron will *never* make anything better than Aliens ('86).

It's the best thing he has. especially the part when arnold kicks a desk and it flies across the room breaks a window then he comes out with a mini gun, the helicopter pilot goes "SHIT THATS A DAMN MINIGUN!" and then he mows everything down (but doesnt kill anyone lol) then, if that wasnt enough he uses and oldschool grenade launcher and blows up a few cars for kicks, then walks away.

The movie may be portraying the worldly balance that needs to be maintained, in both social and environmental aspects. | Yes, I suppose that is the explicit message of the movie. But it's a message that has been rehashed so many times in Hollywood, that it's fast losing its impact. Who doesn't know we should take care of Mother Nature in this day and age? Who doesn't know the Aboriginals of the world are mistreated and marginalised? If James Cameron truly wants to make an intellectual/revolutionary (socially and politically, rather than technologically) movie, he should present new insights into this problem, not just restate it ad nauseam. But that is not his goal. His goal is to make a cool 3D movie AND THAT'S TOTALLY FINE, but let's not pretend it's anything more than a cool 3D movie.
And once we realise it is little more than just a cool 3D movie, we can critique it on the basis of cinematic standards, rather than its intellectual value (which it has little of). So by the cinematic standards set by great movies of the past, I believe the movie is derivative and not creative; my reasons are given above.

I loved it....however, i can't help but to think it was a whole bunch of different stories made popular by movies that was combined to create a lot of the scenes in thestoryline. Some of the titles that come to mind are: Independence day, Pocohantas, Surrogates, and some others that i can't seem to pull out of my head right now.

so they just developed it late, but it was written before most these similar movies.(except pocohantas
on a side note..
i saw this at the imax 3d in langely with my dad...but i wanna take my fiancee out to see it, but the imax is always sold out...and how was the regular Digital 3D compared to imax?
i thought the imax experience was breathtaking, and when i take my gf i want it to be amazing as well....screen size doesnt really bother me...im more concerned about the actual 3D experience..
