you need to be more specific on which RB you are talking about and what chasis you plan on putting it in if you are considering a swap ...
also try Club Nico. they have lots of threads dedicated to the RB series/swaps.

Hmm, i dunno, I wouldn't have the sort of equipment, but maybe by the time I have that kinda money...
What about transmission choices? Right now my engine is very strong but transmission not so much...
^how much did that set you back?

RB20 is a waste of time. Why not just go for a SR20. Same displacement, same potential and its lighter for better handling. If you're going to get an rb at least get a 25 or 26, something worth wile.

RB20 sounds better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But Boostlover's right.. with similar set up (same turbo with good surporting mod) between RB20 and SR20, SR20 seems to make better power.
RB26 will be the best engine to pick, but it's not as straight forward as RB25 swap cuz you'll have to find rb25 transmission, and oil pan unless
you're doing awd conversion.
You can find quite a few engine swap, and conversion kit on line.

Haha found a cheap VQ37 engine on craigslist, i doubt it would cost a lot to wedge it in and stiffen the car etc.

vq or vg would be cool if you insist on an rb20 we have one here available and do plenty of rb builds and swaps

It's ridiculous. Not worth it at all. And you're trying to shove it in a Z31 which is even harder.
That said, Im in the middle of gathering parts/info to do a RB swap into a Z31 myself. It's not my car so I don't have the downtime to play around with.
Should be pretty straight forward. The only problems I've found are the wiring and the intercooler/rad setup.
Other minor problems would be the clutch lines, power steering, and a/c. Those can be easily eliminated by not running both the ac and ps and using a custom hardline directly. This also eliminates the wiring portion for the ac, and gives a ton of space to work with for the plumbing. Because of the sheer length of the RB, you'll need to run a Vmount or similar. Unless you plan on running a tiny sidemount. Fuel lines would need to be redone along with a bigger pump. Also, since the Z31 overheats the second it's missing the lower front air duct, that might need to be modified since it comes stock with a semi Vmount setup for the rad/ac, and that's the only way it gets any air directed to it.
The big one is the wiring. Some of it will need to be lengthened or shortened. Some eliminated alltogether, or rewired using the stock harness plugs.
I won't know until I do it though Posted via RS Mobile |

back home late Z31 came with rb20det with an intercooler so if you can get hold of half cut of JDM Z31 or swap kit that would be the fastest and easiest way.

A buddy is selling his with an RB26 twin turbo in it. $8,200.

I have done a RB swap in my 240 which was really fun and very interesting. It took alot of time but thats because it was my first swap I ever did and the fact I didn't make alot at the time I had to save up alot of money for necessary parts. RBs are now getting more popular and more after market parts are starting to be available. |

wait ....
you want to swap for the z?
how do you have money for all this!??!?!? got a new car AND wanna upgrade the old one?
lol, props to you man.
but in all seriousness, RB20 isn't worth it. If you were to bring some money into the Z. Get a SR20dett. that would be sweeeettttt.

also did you mean twin turbo sr20? because that's retarded.

RB20, other than the sound (which isnt justification enough for me) is a completely useless swap. Any RB series motor for that matter, unless you really require the block strength to run stupid boost is useless in most cars. The only RB motors I would ever swap would be the 25 (preferably Neo6) or the 26, and that, again, if I was looking for high horsepower numbers.
Still an SR die hard though, throw a T28 on and a simple boost up and its got plenty of kick, plus its lighter than the stupid RB20 and shouldn't give you any clearance issues.

VG30DET from Z31 is your best option. Good torque and its a drop in engine. Parts can be baught here easy enough.
If you did go RB you need to either modify the pan or like was was mentioned before, get a Z31 200ZR with rb20det and convert it. The way the crosmember is in those cars you need to run a mid sump. All other rb engines from skylines and stagias run front sumps. So it simply wont fit unless you put some money into the pan being modified.
On a side note, The Z31 is an old car. For the price you spend putting either an sr or rb, doing everything as simple as you can you could just go out and buy a Z32 twin turbo or a 180sx with sr20 turbo. If you did go ahead with a swap and wanted to sell down the road, the Z31 has no re sale value. Theyre not worth more than a couple grand.
With all the cars around here now that are for sale, its in your best interest to re think what you would like and just buy a new car. cheers.
