2011 Ford Mustang GT to get 400-hp 5.0 "Coyote"

guess i'm waiting another year (yeah i wish):

Quote:

We’re still expecting a new, all-aluminum 32-valve 5.0-liter V-8 making about 400 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque—dubbed “Coyote”—to become the GT’s powerplant, bringing output in line with the 426-hp Chevy Camaro SS and 376-hp Dodge Challenger R/T. (We expect that this time around the “5.0” will actually displace 5.0 liters as opposed to the previous engine’s 4.9 liters).

Damn considering how close the current GTs run with the camaro SS, this 400hp one is gonna be amazing, now as long as they keep the price reasonable Not like it could be too unreasonable though, i'm guessing 40k? maybe 45k at the most? since thats about how much an SS goes for. Any more and people would opt for the 500,

Now we can see why the mustang was the only one to survive all these years  IF I HAD THE MONEY!!!

shenmecar 08-28-2009 08:26 AM

Lol, why arent they comparing this 400hp 5.0 motor to the SRT8 Challenger? Only comparing it to the R/T. =P

ilvtofu 08-28-2009 08:32 AM

Meh the challenger = fail, who gives a fuck? Not like the SRT8 could hold it's own against either of the two, save dodge the embarassment maybe?

!Aznboi128 08-28-2009 08:36 AM

um. another high powered mustang with gas prices rising a lot of people are looking for cheap pony car's with high power

price range? not 100% sure but i thought the SRT8 challenger was GT500 territory?

(2010 camaro SS: 6.4 L 426 bhp/ 420 ft lbs $36,995cdn base)
challenger R/T: 5.7 L 370 bhp/ 398 ft-lbs $36,795 cdn base
2010 mustang GT:4.6 L 315 bhp/ 325 ft lbs $36,999cdn base
(2011 mustang GT: 5.0L 400 bhp/ 400 ft lbs (est.) $???)

challenger srt8: 6.1 L 425 bhp/ 420 ft lbs $45,995cdn base
mustang gt500: 5.4 L 540 bhp/ 510 ft lbs $56,499cdn base

... which is why i am hoping this new 5 litre engine is the real deal , because the 3.5-litre v6 twin turbo ecoboost makes 365 bhp/ 350 lbs ft which would have overlapped the output of the current 4.6L V8, and that wouldn't have made sense. so if the GT gets the 5.0L, then us commoners would get the hopefully cheaper TT V6 "econo" version :lol

some stuff on the ecoboost twin turbo v6:

because the challenger srt's msrp is 49,995 or something...but after a long search my dad noticed that all dealers were selling them at 71,000 to start...so he opted for the rt which was 54,000 after taxes and all options

hk20000 08-28-2009 06:04 PM

damn a 32V engine for the Mustang....making a healthy 80HP/L

how time has changed. Many Hondas struggle to get that HP/L.

Because the mustang equivalent to the SS is the SVT Cobra...?

Not really, the Shelby cobra is a more exclusive and expensive as far as list price goes, and the SS camaro has way less power, and the LS3/L99 are the only V8 option right now, something more bespoke may come along, but the performance of the SS right now is not competitive with the GT500

asian_XL 08-30-2009 06:02 AM

400hp means nothing right now.

just like digital cameras nowaday have 10+ mega pixel.
I prefer something with less power and great driving experience

68style 08-30-2009 06:55 AM

I would still like to see an EcoBoost Mustang because anyone who owns or has owned a turbocharged car knows that the factory numbers are just the tip of the iceberg... look at the Supra TT... factory 320hp... everyone knows 400hp is a couple bolt-ons and 600hp is perfectly reasonable with a single. MR2 Turbo same thing, 200 to 250 just changing boost levels a tweak.

The Z28 is said to be made soon. It will take its place at the top where it used to be. It will be a SC V8 making hp in the 500's to compete with the shelby and challenger's top models.

ilvtofu 08-30-2009 02:00 PM

^sounds good, how about a new KR, although buying a KR seems pretty stupid to me, paying a 30k+ premium over the gt500 for...
I wonder if there'll be a more hardcore version of the challenger SRT8 cause that's not that great right now is it?

is this the latest news? ever since GM started it's bankruptcy procedures, everything i've heard about the Z/28 is that it is dead as a doornail until GM comes out of the black

yeah it's unfortunate that the GT is still stuck with the 5spd instead of the 6spd from the GT500 (isn't the camaro a 6spd?). as a result the fuel econ numbers are 8.5 L/100 km on the highway and 11.5 L/100 km in the city (claimed)... at least it can run on regular unleaded.

Rich Sandor 08-31-2009 07:14 PM

if/when the mustang comes with a coyote engine, it'll likely have a 6-spd. Ford has a mandate that all of their cars and trucks will run 6-spds within the next few years.

MDMA 08-31-2009 09:45 PM

5.0 is fuckin badass

No, my info is a bit dated. Didnt hear that it was dead, but I did hear GM adding shifts as theyve presold twice they produced.(camaros)

Its too bad they have the Tremec trans in them. I much prefer the Borg Warner unit.

ilvtofu 09-01-2009 09:05 PM

Test drove a new GT today, really would have my money without hesitation if it had a 6 speed, the 400hp is not a big deal, but I would really appreciate the extra gear, 5 speed wasn't bad though, and the car is as close to perfection that a 35k car can get.

thumper 09-02-2009 06:19 AM

egh... i'm still waiting for rich to have a gt coupe to test drive at his dealership... the last time i checked, they only had v6's (bleah) and a convertible exec demo :(
