For those that like to get away from Vancouver, and see the rest of the Lower Mainland, New Westminster has an entire database of photos available to look through.

NWPL Historical Photo Database

It's not great for passive scrolling, but if you put something in the search term, you can get started and just scroll through results.

just taking my house for a drive

Royal City Mall before it was Royal City Mall and was Woodwards, and only half the size it became.

The Woodward's in New West was awesome. Best food floor evar! Their lasagna was to die for. Many a people bought it fresh from Woodward's, baked it at home, and passed it off for their own at dinner parties, LOL.

As far as the downtown Vancouver store goes, a part of Vancouver died when it shut its doors for good.

They say a picture paints a thousand words, but nothing comes close to the experience of actually having been there - the people, the crazy $1.49 days, etc. I will never forget the times I helped my mom carry the groceries home from Woodwards and having their soft serve - the world's best, no doubt. Happy times, simpler times.

I think I'll call my mom right now...............

Here's another photo. Well, drawing.

I didn't know that Royal City Mall was only built in 1991. That mall died fast. Go in there now and you can hear arteries harden. Although Wal-Mart is opening in the Zellers location, so maybe that will re-start things.

\Sweet, found one.

This is a little bizarre but for those of you who are familiar with the Fox Cinema on Main Street and Kingsway (Mt. Pleasant) here's a look inside what will become the new performing arts facility for the hipsters.

You know, I'm sure it will be fantastic as a venue for hipsters, but I think the city will be lacking a quality spank tank.

Where are you supposed to empty out the pipes in public now? Dukes...I'm actually asking...where do you think you'll go?

yeah, good times @ downtown Woodwards. I remember picking up the groceries in the parking lot after you're done shopping.

I forgot all about that. All those conveyers and tracks of rollers on the ground floor. Correct me if I'm wrong. The skywalk to and from the store was on the third floor of store and 6th floor of the parkade, right?

Wasn't there also a sub walkway between the parkade and the food floor?

Off topic a bit, but does Army and Navy downtown still have that scale between the floors on the stairway?

Woodard's malted milk.......... mmmmm, mmmm, good.

I remember the skywalk connected to the store's third floor; but I don't recall the level on the parkade side

^Polar Bear Swim........ first in NA. Cool.

I remember the hookers on Davie Street. High school days, just getting driver's license, "borrowing" dad's car, and cruising Davie Street for good look at all the hookers with the gang, LOL. And believe me, the place was crawling with hookers......... back then, high cleass hookers were on Georgia Street (at the Bay........ yes, Bonnie Brooks, at the Bay, hee hee).

Other memories...... driving fast around Stanley Park with no headlights on at night, submarine races, etc. Simpler times.

Hogan's Alley area. We were told by parents and others never to go anywhere near there. Boogie Man and who do voodoo. Blacks and Asians don't mix well was the message back then. There weren't too many black kids in Strathcona. In fact, I don't recall any.

When it got to my time, there were still a few on Davie but most of the decent ones were on Richards and Helmcken, by the diner.

And uh, yeah, uh....Stanley Park...

Not exactly Vancouver, but relevant nonetheless: the Richmond Museum's current exhibition chronicles the evolution of transportation in and around Richmond up to the present day. I took a short walk through it and found it to very comprehensive.

On The Move: Richmond's Transportation Legacy
July 23, 2013 - January 26, 2014
Opening Reception: Tuesday, July 23, 7:00 p.m.
This exhibit explores, through photographs and artefacts from the Museum's collection and on loan from the community, how changing modes of transportation have shaped this city. Themes include transportation related to sea, land and air, and contemporary issues such as city planning.

It's probably the same thing I saw about a year ago........ it must be permanent display now. I gather the neon display is now long gone. I posted pics in this thread, I believe.

EDIT: Found it!!

I used to ride around with older friends when I was like 14-15 in their cars, I remember once a bunch of us went to check out the hookers and I could not believe how many prostitutes we saw. Davie street was such an incredible shithole, it's hard to imagine today.

One of my high school teachers in like grade 9, an alternate school teacher, used to use the acronym "S.C.O.D.S." when he spoke of dropping out of high school.

"If you drop out, you'll be S.C.O.D.S., never forget that!" he would say.

(Sucking Cocks On Davie Street) Imagine the fallout today if a teacher was caught giving that advice to students, haha!

We also cruised in my friend's van to throw eggs at people. One night we saw a huge group of hookers behind the Astoria pub, creeped up and saw two hookers brawling, it was so vicious it freaked out the 15 year old me, haha.

I had a great childhood up until I was about 11, where everything turned to shit during my parent's divorce. One of my fondest memories was going to the downtown Woodwards.

Christmas at the Woodwards downtown was like nothing you see today, they had these huge lego displays, and the whole store felt like a carnival. It was a real shopping experience, and from what I remember, people dressed up to go shopping. MG1, those soft-serve chocolate frosties in the basement were the pinnacle of my happiest moments as a child. Often my German grandmother would wander off with me while the rest of the family would shop, she'd buy me a frosty and we'd talk while people-watching.

One Christmas I remember they had this GIGANTIC lego spaceship in one of the windows of Woodwards. I wish there were some photos of it kicking around somewhere. As a child I remember Christmas at Woodwards was so magical.

Yes! Malted chocolate milk was my reward for helping my mom carry the groceries home. Nothing these days come close to the atmosphere of Woodwards downtown.
