The sound of the old trolley buses brings back so many memories...half of my childhood was in spent riding in them! |
This is how we rolled.............. the sound is music to my ears, as my bedroom faced Powell Street. In those days, Powell Street was very busy. Those dome lights. BC Hydro operated busses back then. https://www.youtube.com/watch?hl=id&gl=ID&v=cYNbP8JnlXE |
MG1. I think I saw you in this video. You were the naked little kid around the pool right? |

Thanks, Verdasco, for reminding me of this thread. For some reason, I thought it died way back, but the last post was back in late 2014. I still haven't seen Deadpool yet. Apparently, my old apartment building is in the movie. Dude lives there or something like that. |
this thread needs to be stickied |

Does anyone know much about Oakalla Prison? I know it use to be near Deer Lake and was torn down in 1992. From the pictures, it looks like it was just east of Royal Oak. |
oh hell yeah i remember oakalla. royal oak back then was not the new one you see now. i remember one day being in lockdown at my friend's place where we were cramming for highschool finals because of a prison escape and the rcmp were driving down the streets using the loudspeakers telling us to lock the doors. good times. |
Oakalla........... wow. Totally forgot about that place. The old Royal Oak is still there. Well, part of it, anyway. https://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j...LgkOU-Fg0dshFw BC?s last execution ? Nathaniel Christopher |
I used to know the warden of that place, he was a really nice guy. He died a few years ago when he fell off his ladder at his house. My wife and I were walking around that area one day and this old guy comes up to me and tells me he used to be a guard there and started telling me about how things were back then where everything was located. It was a really interesting conversation hearing about the past. |
History of Vancouver - Nine O'Clock Gun at Stanley Park I'm not sure it still goes off........... will be listening. lol 45 minutes to go +/- EDIT: Spoiler! |

I remember the Duffin's on 33rd. Went there whenever the family went to the cemetery to pay our respects. Amazing doughnuts back then. |
Before there was Tim Hortons, there was Duffins on 33rd. |
went to duffins tonight because of this article. it used to be a go to place for me years and years ago, but I haven't been in ages. It's exactly the same as it always has been! |

I remember Duffin's on 33rd and Main. Their current store on Knight and 41st serves a mix bag of stuff - donuts, sandwiches, and Viet food. Something for everyone ! |
Chorizo with egg, torta sub ftw |

I think this is my favourite thread of all by far. I don't think I have much to add but this feels just like I was listening to my parents tell me their stories of growing up here. They came here around 1980 (separately haha, met here) and at this time of posting, I'm only 21. Later I'll ask them for more stories haha. Now that I look back, discrimination still existed even from the school teachers themselves. Of course, as a kid I didn't know better, but now that I recall in Grade 1, the teacher had me in ESL, and reportedly told my mom at parent-teacher night that she "didn't know I could read so well" And that was in 2000 at John Henderson Annex (the one on E 54th Ave) But on the brighter side, I remember so well that my grandma would take me shopping on Fraser St (from 49th to 42nd i guess), and on other times we would take the #8 down to Chinatown. I have a vague memory of the yellow paper transfers and the clear coin boxes on the buses. Watching the video above of the old New Flyer trolleys really brought back the feelings. And the bags of milk. My parents had always bought jugs, but my grandma always bought the Dairyland bagged milk from Buy-Low-Foods until they stopped making them here. No one ever believes the 20-year old kid who claims that there used to be bagged milk in Vancouver. "Nuh-uh, only Ontario has it" My dad and I used to bike every summer. I remember when they used to post up the signs in the summer, like "June is Bike Month" or "July is Bike Month". We used to live near Rupert Station, and I would say I was maybe around 7 or 8, so early 2000s, we would bike to Trout Lake. No bike lanes lol, although there were already established bike routes. Basically we would bike along Broadway, then turn at Slocan or Kaslo and take the bike route up Grandview Hwy N, then etc to Trout Lake. You see, even then we could safely bike on the road. It was Broadway for goodness sake. We kept right when we needed to, and the drivers weren't crazy. The other place we would bike is Stanley Park. We would park the car somewhere Pacific Ave and Burrard, then take the bike route and loop the whole Stanley Park. It was chill. I don't feel these sort of vibes anymore... The only good time I had in school was Grade 2 at Sexsmith, my teacher was Ms Warner, and I would say she was one of the best teachers I've had. Granted that I don't have many memories of her, (don't even have a photo because she was away during the class photo) but I think what made her the best was that she gave us lots of hands on activities to do. Most of the other teachers I had thought I had ADHD or something because I took a longass time to do academic homework, but hey that's why I work on cars and not in an office ;D Actually one time we had some kind of art assignment, and a professional artist came and selected our drawings for an art mural. So, yeah. My drawing made it onto the wall at the Marpole Community Centre, and as far as I know, it's still there, but I havent been there for probably over ten years LOL. I guess I am a piece of Vancouver history! |
