Probably the wisest choice they've made. The assessment for that mall is $148M last year and the previous year was $118M.

Maybe it was their outreach programme................ or still is, gulolol.

Getting rid of/selling property, even though the land is owned by the district, is frowned upon by the province. At least that's what I've heard. In though times, though, that money can come in handy. I guess they don't hand out free pencils and notebooks in Vancouver schools these day. There was so much waste in that district in the heydays.

I remember when I moved out to Surrey in Gr 5, I didn't bring any supplies with me on my first day because I thought everyone gave out supplies for free.

My mom used to work at the now demolished Jantzen building. So many memories being in that neigbhourhood back in those days. It was seedy and kind of gross but it still oozed character. Kingsgate used to have a Royal Bank which was my mom's main branch and I used to read her bank book (remember those?) to pass the time. Circling that tiny ass parking lot made me think it was a race course. Always appreciated people's parking abilities too considering how small parking lots were yet how big the cars were back then.

Looks like the back alley of most areas on the west side of downtown. Davie Street comes to mind.

My guess would be eastside. Somewhere near Clarke Drive or Commercial Drive, north of Hastings. That "Hotel" sign........... can someone zoom in and try to decipher what is on the side of the hotel building?

Come to think of it, the building is too tall to be anywhere I thought it would be. Razor might be right.

I want to know what that sunlit building on the right side in the background is.

OMG, OMG, OMG (just took a closer look at the photos again).............. remember I was telling you guys about this restaurant on Hastings Street that served the best Chow Fun on the planet? It was called the Phoenix Restaurant, so I thought. Cot dam, it was the name of the hotel above it. The food there was greasy as fuck and cockroaches added to the decor. Can anyone make out the name (chinese) on the round red sign? I don't know why, but I never stepped into the Ovaltine. Too "White," I guess............. the food, that is. And......... the parking in front. Imagine having to parallel park those vehicles that most likely didn't have power steering into tight spaces? No C-Lai's back then, gulolol. Plus, bumpers were actually bumpers.

LOL, the American.......... back in those days drinking establishments had to have a separate entrance for Men and Ladies. Something to do with keeping unattached men from unattached women. The Men's side was for men only, while the Ladies side was for women with husbands, escorts, and boyfriends. One of the reasons was to keep prostitutes out and to keep VD (STI) in check (during the war). This was a provincial law, not to be confused with the practice in other countries and in history (colonial).

And the LUX............ went there many times with my friends to watch Rock Hudson movies. My sister had a crush on that guy. She (we were in elementary school at the time) would pay for my friends and me to go watch them. Movies were like 25 cents back then.

The girls in snack bar.............. nuff said. Heinz soup for 35 cents......... waaaay too expensive. You can get Campbell's soup nowadays for 50 cents or less on sale. Mind you, they're not the same size or the concentrated type.

I was just thinking back to an early 2000's staple, Jive pool hall. It was on Broadway and Spruce, I believe. Big-ass warehouse area of pool tables, a little bar, some arcade games. Up until 2003 or 2004, he'd let people smoke inside! Obviously this was very contrary to the bylaws, but that went on forever and nobody said anything, and TBH it's a fucking pool hall, if you don't like it, then leave.

His only rule was if you smoked at your table, use an ash tray. And if you're going to drink, you had to drink at the bar area.

He had Napster up and people could download and play songs.

Place is long gone, and in its place is some cookie cutter condo building.

Yup, when I was at Strathcona Elementary (when lunch hour was actually an hour), we all headed down to the False Creek area to catch tadpoles, salamanders, and frogs. It was all marshland, as far as the eye could see. Then the city filled it in and all the produce places went up. Funny thing was, the railway tracks were always there............ Vancouver is full of underground creeks and streams. I guess they just built on top of it all. Want to look into it, but got better things to do, lol.

The gravel track across the city pound used to be an old race track back in the 50's.

My.pleasant has a whole society based on the history they have some amazing photos. They have a massive panorama they sometimes display at like car free days etc that shows false creek up to Clark, it’s crazy.

Does anyone know if it’s possivle at all to dig into the history of a house? I’d love to know more about my own place but outside of scouring the Vancouver archives for pictures (actually found a picture of my next door neighbors house from the 50’s) and the land registry paying for the original development design, I’ve come to a dead end

It was mentioned further back in this thread. Remnants are still there. Well, I haven't been there in a while............ last time was when I was in high school. Place was a make out area. Yes, I do have memories of the....... nvm. There are children on this forum.

I used to walk to and from Britannia Secondary and Powell and Gore. I still cannot find what the meat/deli factory outlet that was near Strathcona Park was called. I swear it was Vancouver Sausage Company, but they deny it. It was on the north side on Parker Street between Glen and Clarke Drives. Damn good pepperoni sticks.

Just curious and too lazy to do the research, lol, but anyone have links to photos of the old Georgia Street Bridge/Viaduct? The one before the current one replaced it.

Also the wooden bridge at Cambie (Cambie Street Bridge). I think the current one was just built on top of the former bridge and slowly transformed. It wasn't that long ago.

Those ‘terminal city’ pictures are great. It’s strange to me that the first comment on that page talks about disappointment with lack of multiculturalism. I see what looks like an East Indian girl, an Asian lady, and a Chinese store with 2 Chinese men standing in front of it. Also, many of the Caucasian people look Italian (probably first or second generation immigrants), which is a very different culture from my caucasian immigrant parents. Talk about lack of cultural awareness.
