Any idea if that's going to be the same design as the Sprint version? I'm rather fond of the manly Hero chin.

I suppose you man-love Jay Leno's manliness then.

(To answer your question, I have no clue, but going by the fact that the Euro Hero has a chin, I think we'll get the chin'd one.)

Read the first post. Their carrier is branded "WIND Mobile."

Anyone know if a (unlocked obviously) 2G GSM phone will work on Bell/Telus after this rollout? Been getting mixed answers on this one.. some say HSPA/HSDPA is supposed to be backwards compatible?

Only if they have a GSM network, which I don't think they do as it would make no sense to step backwards.

^ But that would also make no sense as I thought the point of this whole deal would be so that Rogers doesn't monopolize the roaming fees. I'm sure not everyone from Europe and Asia has a 3G phone.

In any case, my fingers are crossed..

Do you have any idea how expensive it is to roll out a network? Most phones nowadays come with at least ONE band that works somewhere in the world so ultimately, Rogers will not and cannot monopolize any roaming whatsoever. Everybody gets a fair share by having a slice of a pie - depending on how good your radio engineers are.

Are you saying that Bellus is going to let Rogers keep their 100% monopoly on all GSM roaming in Canada when everybody else shows up here for the Olympics, and that they will just try for a fraction of the HSPA/HSPDA market share?

It's not that Bellus will let them, it's a business decision where inevitably GSM will be a defunct network and technology, much like its predecessor, TDMA. Companies have to future proof in order for it to be a sustainable business. The Olympics is nothing more than a 2 week'ish event. It isn't feasible to bank on an inferior technology and network just for a matter of 2 weeks. Telecom markets will always grow and expand, never will they shrink or go backwards.

Let's face it - GSM is SOOOOO 1996. There are much more carriers who will go straight to 3G/4G simply because it is a better and cost-effective network solution as opposed to GSM (re: Bellus.)

Fact - Rogers Wireless will no longer build/increase their existing GSM network. Most of the new sites don't even have GSM, only 3G. A lot of phone manufacturers will build/develop phones that have at least 2100MHz UMTS and 850MHz UMTS. You will slowly see phones with 850/1700/2100MHz, if not, 1900MHz UMTS. It won't happen overnight, but surely and slowly, you'll see it. This will allow roaming agreements amongst carriers/countries, contradicting the notion that Rogers will keep a monopoly on GSM roaming in Canada. They will keep this so-called "monopoly" but eventually, that monopoly will fade away as the world moves on to UMTS and LTE.

And besides, why does it matter to any of us if Rogers has a GSM roaming monopoly? It's not like any of us will be "roaming" on their network. Ted Rogers decided it was best to go the way of GSM, and his company took a risk and it has proven to work to their financial advantage while Bellus went the other way and went CDMA. First past the post wins but historically if you remember, Verizon had a huge financial stake in Telus so Verizon had a huge say in how Telus operated, what equipment and network they'd run, and how they'd operate as a business. CDMA was pushed in North America by Qualcomm and companies like Motorola and Nortel banked on it, only to realize much later on, it simply doesn't work all that well elsewhere in the world. Which is why Bellus needs to move on to 3G, a new world standard and eventually ditch their CDMA network. Rogers had TDMA. It took them 10 years to tear it down and they migrated all their customers on to GSM while the rest of the world was already on GSM, if not, 3G.

They have 1700MHz AWS spectrum which a lot of phones not sold in North America are capable of.

That, and everybody thinks they're going to revolutionize the Canadian wireless industry.

Not.

Those commercials are awesome! What are you talking about?

And why would I be unhappy if my friends back home can get the same phone as me? Of course, they'll be paying for it for three years, and will be paying 3 or 4 times as much for their plans, but that doesn't make me unhappy at all
