NEW CARRIERS: Planned HSPA Launches Q4 2009/Q1 2010

Here they are! Highlights include Bell this month, TELUS in October and WIND in November.

You want unlocked phones? Bell and TELUS run on 850/1900 Mhz just like Rogers/Fido, while the new carriers run on AWS 3G, meaning you'll need unlocked T-Mobile USA phones if you want something different. Curiously enough, it also lists Fido as running on 2100 Mhz.....I can haz Japanese 3G?

http://gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_ca.shtml

Possible phones at launch:
Quote:
Bell Mobility:
BlackBerry Bold 9700, Blackberry Bold 9000, Apple iPhone, Nokia N97, Nokia 2730, Nokia 6350, LG Xenon, Samsung T746, Novatel HSPA Turbo Stick.

DAVE Wirleless (Name will change at launch):
Back in June we reported that Dave will offer BlackBerry devices and also handsets running Google’s Android platform”.In addition, on June 4th they announced “DAVE Wireless customers will be able to roam on T-Mobile USA’s growing 3G network and on T-Mobile USA’s GSM network throughout the United States. T-Mobile USA customers will be able to roam on DAVE Wireless’ UMTS network”

TELUS Mobility:
Apple iPhone, BlackBerry Bold 9700, HTC Hero, LG BL40, LG GB 255, Nokia E71

Globalive (WIND Mobile):
WIND Mobile recently announced on their site that “We will not have the iPhone at launch”, but did reveal through another post that “We will allow unlocked handsets onto our network… we are in discussions to source smart-phones from a number of vendors (including Android); and we are talking to both “brandname” manufacturers as well as some new manufacturers.”

too bad there's no info on their plans tho, it'll be interesting to see if their plans would be better than our retention plans at rogers/fido

hopefully this will make rogers realize that they're too damn expensive and more customers will move towards telus/bell.

retention plans are meant for saving clients. not for new clients.

Of course, but they could have deals at least as good as retention plans for potential switchers. Call 'em "we-are-awesome-switch-to-meeeeee" plans.

What does this all translate to for an existing Bell customer? I'm currently using the HTC Touch Diamond, but it has no SIM card or anything. Is Bell going to start carrying SIM cards, or does it mean I can now use a broader variety of unlocked phones and just take it to a Bell Store for activation?

Bell and Telus are already shipping SIM cards. They've been seen already. You should have the option to change to a cheap, crappy card with a SIM through a dealer then place said SIM in a decidedly more expensive, awesome unlocked phone.

So once the network is all rolled out, I can just walk into a dealership and ask them for a SIM card, and then stick that in my new unlocked phone? Do I have to disable the onboard chip on my pre-existing phone or does something else happen?

They'll likely have to deactivate your existing phone, yes.

Damn, this sounds good. I wanted to switch to Rogers because I could switch phones often (6 months is too long!), but now that Bell's rolling out this new HSPA network.. !

I believe there is a stipulation in the competition portion of the "porting numbers act" that denies companies from participating in such events.

Really? Would that still apply if the customer wasn't porting their number? I still hear of these offers, which is why I ask.

New carriers + "awesome phones" = overhyped.
