Question about booking with tour operator or build your own package

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has experience with building your own package to cancun (flight and hotel) instead of booking with a tour operator i.e. Sunquest.

The reason I ask is that when I put a flight and hotel package together on expedia.ca, which also includes ground transportation it is significantly cheaper than booking a package with any of the tour operators. It is a difference of $500 peron ...

My question is has anyone built their own package instead of going with a tour operator and know what would I be missing out on? I called expedia and they said that if the hotel is all inclusive then it still would be even if i book it on my own.

Another question I had is what if i book on an american website. With the dollar being quite good when i convert the american price to canadian i would still save money and can still fly out from vancouver. Is there any liability issues I should be aware of if i book on american site?

thanks for your help!
