wahyinghung 10-05-2009 08:33 PM

Hopefully you can get the phone without any data plan......

Levitron 10-05-2009 09:08 PM

I think the bigger picture here is that there's going to be better competition. No more GSM monopoly by Rogers!

jimzilla 10-05-2009 10:20 PM

and there better be wifi on it. Dont want to fork out 45$ for just a data plan

Wrong. They still have GSM monopoly...no more HSPA monopoly is the reality. ;)

hotjoint 10-06-2009 07:21 AM

read about this last night, should be interesting to see what the prices will be for data plans

Tim Budong 10-06-2009 11:28 AM

nono
Rogers loses GSM monopoly
GSM is voice, HSPA is data

the iphone is full GSM/HSPA and not like the palmpre where it runs CDMA voice with 3g data!

+Kardboard+ 10-06-2009 11:55 AM

Confirmed, Mr. darthchilli. The press also talked about Bell rolling out GSM for the Olympics this morning (roaming agreements or not? :p).

Correct, Telus and Bell spent a billion dollars building a coast to coast UMTS network. The project was finished ahead of schedule, dealing with my corporate Bell rep late last year he gave me the heads up that this was coming down the pipe.

Yup, talked with my friend who is working for Glentel, and he did give me a heads-up that Bell had their UMTS/GSM network running in the summer, doing tests.

Finally - iPhone!

We've had threads on this since forever hahaha, but it's now offish! Crazy...surreal almost. hahaha :lol

StylinRed 10-07-2009 01:40 AM

Anyone have any idea if this iPhone will work with Telus' existing towers? I spend half my time in Iqaluit Nunavut, where they just recently acquired cell service, nevermind this fancy shmancy HS... whatever the acronym is..

skholla 10-07-2009 04:26 PM

Telus and Bell built a new UMTS/HSDPA network, it is not compatible with with regular GSM phones, only 3G GSM phones and newer devices. Because the iPhone 3G and 3GS are both 3G GSM phones they will work on the new network.... but they wont work on the old CDMA network... as far as coverage in Nunavut goes Im not really sure, if there is CDMA only then you will be SOL.

hud 91gt 10-07-2009 04:30 PM

I'm assuming it is only the old CDMA network... Hmm I'll have to talk to a Telus rep.

the price war of undercutting each other never lasts long
these companies keep on fighting and fighting, but guess what, rogers will continue to charge insane prices due to the fact that the iphone is a fad phone. People who want it will pay to use it, knowing tis, the web surfing is still great on the iphone

you will still have to have a data plan in some way or other.

but keep in mind, that for bell, you only have to keep the data plan for one year. not the life of your contract.

one year for bell vs three years for rogers
