latest sketch/rumors of the subaru version: Quote:
Although the highly anticipated FT-86 is going to be displayed by Toyota, development of the Subaru version is also well under way. Expect to see even more specs in the next 2 years!
The 086A sports car is being jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru, for some reason, it will not be displayed in the Subaru booth. Because the mechanical components including the engine and chassis were created by Subaru and the design by Toyota, Toyota was allowed to display the design concept only with Subaru's permission.
However, taking a deeper look reveals that the reality isn't so simple. Toyota actually has a significant influence in the mechanical components of this car as well. First, let's take a look at the engine. The car is equipped with the next generation EJ20, which, as mentioned before, uses the same direct port injection engine as the Toyota's D4-S. In addition, it is equipped with 6 speed transmission manufactured by Aisin.
On the other hand, Subaru uses this car as a base and improves its sportiness image and is working on creating a "STI version" on their own.
There are rumors that it might use a turbo, but taking factors such as the strength of the drivetrain are taken into consideration. Chances are that it will use the next generation 2.5L EJ25 instead. The maximum horsepower will be roughly 240HP-250HP compared to the normal 200HP.
The settings around the foot? will attempt to keep the basic characteristics of the car, but with additional tuning to increase the amount of (something)G generated. Of course, the tread and tire size will increase, and the fender shape will be changed accordingly as well.
The car will most likely be revealed at the next Tokyo Motor Show in 2011, or the Tokyo Auto Salon in 2012 just prior to its release. What kind of performance can we expect from this wide-tread, wide and low STI version? Our expectations are high!
The STI version will be equipped with a wide fender, a specialized front bumper and rear spoiler. Will it also succeed in the world of motor sports?

If any one remember, in 2004/2005 Subaru STi division created a highly tuned 2.0 NA engine on a boxer engine that makes about 200 hp, but that engine missed lots of spot lights due to the highly regarded 2.5L STi engine that makes 300 hp. I believe that same engine was somehow developed into the NA engine that's gonna go into this 86 replacement car.
If someone dig into it more, you'll see the car being painted yellow with Rally stickers too.

What's the point of Toyota hyping the "New AE86" if there not going to release it in North America and Europe?

hahhahaa if they use the crown Athelete as the simulated weight of the FT86 then no thanks. On the other hand the Crown Athlete looks really sporty shortened.
That prototype could have been the drivetrain prototype for the LF-A for all I know.

i wonder how a 140hp econo-sports car would sell. i don't think it makes sense to anyone but the most hardcore of enthusiasts, being that only they could overlook the lack of power (30hp less than a Mazda3 or a Lancer..) and focus on the rest of the positives.
also, this car would have to be incredibly cheap to appeal to the masses. at 140hp, it could only be marketed as an entry-as-hell budget sports car. and the thing with really cheap cars is that the margins are low and you have to sell a shit ton of them to make any money. can you really imagine this thing selling in thousands by the day?

it's all speculation at this point. maybe the 140hp number was meant ot mislead and it may actually make much more power. or maybe it dosen't matter at all... for example look at how well the scion tc sold when it first came out.

That's true the tc was a sucess for a car with little hp, but I'm sure there's gonna be a trd supercharger like always bumping power to 200hp Posted via RS Mobile |

May be they will fit the NA version EJ25 in there... ~160hp.

From what I hear, supercharging a stock NA 2.5l boxer engine isn't too reliable. You'd need to upgrade all the internals and such to keep it maintained. Now if you were talking about Subaru making their own supercharged boxer engine, that's a whole different story
Just like turboing an NA boxer engine, the maximum PSI you could possibly run is around 8psi on stock internals without blowing your engine. That, and it also cuts the lifespan of the engine by half. But this is what i've read from Nasioc, not from experience :P
