What tools are in your garage?

I know that there is a tool forum, but it looks pretty dead so i decide to post here.

What tools are you guys running in your garages?

I've been using Mastercraft maximum series but my set went missing and i'm looking to replace it. Does anybbody have any suggestions for tools in the same price range? i'm by no means a pro mechanic... but i do like to work on my car.

I've been thinking about a set of Toptuls but nobody really seems to have any experience with them locally but i've seen them at the garage journal http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=24294

most people purchase from http://www.wrenhandtools.com/ on the garage journal but i've found a canadian site that sells them www.thetoolchest.ca

what do you guys think?

For value you can't beat Mastercraft Maximum.. for 76 bucks.

I get some of my tools from griots.. but I only use the good tools when the Maximum etc can't do the work.

I would love a set of Snap-On tools but as a weekend warrior, can't really justify the price.
so for me, its Mastercraft with their kickass lifetime warrenty and a whole lot of honda tools

Set of Snap-On and Husky. Both used 10+ years. Great tools!

I pretty much buy as I go. I check if I need anything for a job and then buy the necessary tools. So my tool set is all over the place.

whatever you do, just dont buy princess auto air tools :/

my front tire nearly fell off driving up the coquihalla, both user and tool problem, but you would think an impact wrench could get a nut at least passed hand tightned :S

^ Which hammer?

An Apprentice Hammer or a MASTER Technician Hammer. I can't afford the Master Technician hammer. I heard awesome reviews about it though. ;)

You should ALWAYS finish tightening lugs by hand (i.e. with a wrench), and ideally with a torque wrench, for the sake of not over/undertightening them.

i have ikea building tools and some shit from CT. hahaha im just a noob though.

ohhh i also have a 25 dollar jack from CT!

godwin 10-07-2009 01:28 PM

Chances are your air compressor didn't supply enough air. Always use a torque wrench (at proper torque specs) AFTER you use an air wrench.

I bought a Toptul 130pc set a while back on ebay, and they're great tools, the finish on them is really nice. The tools are very strong, unlike some of the Stanley stuff I used to own. I had no idea they're available locally.

jlenko 10-07-2009 08:11 PM

Unless you're using a torque-limiting stick, you shouldn't use an air gun on lug nuts... period. If you over-tighten them, you'll end up doing what a buddy of mine did - stretch the studs and weaken them, then they snapped at high speed. Smashed up that car mighty quick..

Nvasion 10-07-2009 08:34 PM
