CRA reassessment asking to pay $700, what to do?

A friend of mine recently sent in a child tax benefit form to the tax centre. She said she never sent in a request for reassessment to them. What she received back was a reassessment and asking to pay them around $700 of tax reassessment charges in 2 weeks or else they will be charged interest, which is outrageous
So what can they do?

The way it's worded it sounds like they are charging her $700 for doing a reassessment but that doesn't make sense. If they did a reassessment (audit) and figured out she owes money not much you can do. If she feels she's in the right and they are wrong they can appeal. As far as fining and applying interest the CRA is worse then any loan shark and they can do whatever they hell they want. If we're one day late in paying our monthly taxes for our small business we'll get a $300+ fine.

Filing A Notice of Objection

Upon receipt of a Notice of Reassessment, you have 90 days from the date of mailing of the Notice to file with the CRA a formal Notice of Objection to the reassessment. Your Notice of Objection will then be considered by the Appeals Division of the CRA. The CRA’s Appeals Division may:

* vacate the CRA auditor’s reassessment
* confirm the auditor’s reassessment of your tax return, or
* make its own adjustments and issue to you a new Notice of Reassessment. In any event, they will issue to you a Notice of Decision outlining the reasons that they have chosen to vacate, confirm, or vary the CRA auditor’s reassessment of your return.

Call CRA 1-800-959-8281. Have a copy of your most recent tax return maybe just the notice of reassessment will do. They'll ask you a bunch of questions to confirm who you are. Then ask them what happend. You can PM me if you have any questions, I'm an accountant.

"In the CRA, you're guilty until proven innocent".

GL, but the reassesment can happen anytime they feel like.
