| How much will US Customs charge me
I ordered a BMW 5 series M5 front bumper, should be getting it this week. I ordered it to my mailbox in Blaine, WA. How much will US Customs charge me for declaring it and bringing it over? Or should i get it painted and installed in the states?
Please let me know, the bumper was for $400... Can i use say i bought it off someone i met on craigslist and have no receipt?

If you are bringing back from US, it would be Canadian custom who charges you.
From past experience, it's GST+PST+Duty (if applicable). Usually around 18~20%
Whatever you do, DO NOT TRY the craiglist thing. My friend went through that and they even asked him for proof of where the listing was or any email communication between the sellers confirming the price.
My friend got his custom fees calculated based on a brand-new unit at MSRP at the end, they said if he wanted to, he could collect enough evidence and appeal this decision and they would reimburse his money, otherwise. GG.

Wow, 18-20% for car parts is a lot. Does it matter where it is made in? What's the difference?

if it's made in US, Canada, Mexico, then it's under NAFTA and u only have to pay GST & PST. If made anywhere else, then it depends on where it's made.

I always expect the worst and factor that into the price before buying outside of Canada

Pay the 19% duties, customs, taxes at most. It is only $80 bucks to save you alot of hassle from customs.

to minimize your cost, you might want to do the following (assuming you want to do it without any hassles from CBSA):
1. pick up your bumper, get it painted and installed in the states (it must be cheaper there)
2. cash deal, or rip up your receipt, or mail your receipt back to a friend's place (labour for paint)
3. declare your bumper as $400 (as shown in the receipt from the vendor)
4. pay your pst, gst, duties (it's only 12% + duties) i am too lazy to check it for you, it's available.
5. pay your dues
6. drive back hassle free.
this way, you 1. save painting and installing cost doing in canada (it's gonna be another $400 bucks for a good paintjob) 2. save on shipping your stock bumper back because you are bring back your shit 3. it seems legit in every way, since you paid SOME duties
doing everything in the states will save you tons of money. labour is super cheap!
i got tires mounted for only $5-8 each, where fucking tireshops here charge $20+tax

Most of the time they can't be bothered with duty on stuff like this, so you'll just pay GST and PST... and seriously... this thread and all the potential trouble you could find yourself in over $50?

Duty is 6% on things that are manufactured outside of NA... in most cases they don't charge...
so you would have to pay ALL IN to customs $74.88... much cheaper than dealing with them if they seize your car if they catch you in a lie...
