Data Plan Users

hey guys, I have a Question.
I have a data plan for 3years for an HTC Dream and im getting a new blackberry bold.
Do you guys think i can use the HTC data plan on the bold or do i have to change it to blackberry data plan?

Thanks for advance,

most likely u will need to switch to a bb plan.

if u surf on ur phone a lot, then the dataplan is benefitial. also, depends on ur provider. rogers seperates the data into instant messaging data + surfing data.

JSALES 10-14-2009 02:14 AM

not to shit on your thread or anything but does this apply to the iphone as well if i wanted a blackberry?

SkinnyPupp 10-14-2009 02:51 AM

I always wondered why data plans are always kept seperate from "blackberry data plans". Do blackberries not use standard GPRS or HSPA data connections like any other smartphone? If not, why would anyone want one?

!SG 10-14-2009 03:16 AM

they like keeping it seperate to market it seperately to charge us more.

normal data will work if you dont switch, you probably wont get the bis services tho if u dont switch to a bb data plan

Just a random question... Can I get an HTC magic but not buy a data plan and still surf the internet? im on campus a lot so would I be able use the wifi provided??

My friend said he canceled data plan but accidentally connected to 3G after his connection at UBC was cut and was charged a massive amount...I heard there is a way to block 3G connections.. Is this true?
TIA

Yes you can buy a Magic without a data plan.

Yes you can use Wifi.

Yes you call Rogers or Fido and tell them you want a 3G data block put on your account. MAKE CERTAIN YOU TAKE DOWN THEIR EMPLOYEE ID NUMBER AND THE CUSTOMER SERVICE TRANSACTION NUMBER so that they don't fuck you up the ass if they "forget" to put the block in.

Yes, the iphone and bb data plans are not interchangeable

I'm not sure, I asked a rogers rep this question back when I was thinking of trying out the ifun.

They just told me that I would not be able to use my berry data plan if i were to switch so I'm just going
off of what they told me

Blackberry plans are compatible with all other phones, but not the other way around.

ForbiddenX 10-14-2009 11:10 AM

I thought it was possible to get a data plan working for a blackberry. All you had to do was ask rogers to enable the BIS for it.

Here's the thread on HoFo:

A Blackberry Data plan has settings to connect to BIS (Blackberry servers). Where the regular data plan is just an internet connection with no relation to bis. If u use a sim with a regular data plan, you will just have internet but no bbm, bis email etc..

Plus rogers has to pay BB a flat rate for each phone with data plan so a bb data plan is actually less profitable for them. Might as well change and less rogers keep a little less of your money..

So Blackberries use a proprietary network?

That is stupid

Well BB data is encrypted...and compressed. So it's rare to see a BB phone hit above 100mb a month unless you're doing serious streaming. Stupid but smart on RIM's part.

SkinnyPupp 10-14-2009 08:51 PM

Actually looking at Rogers plans, Blackberry data is no more expensive than normal data. It's just separated. So it's not that stupid, as long as you can switch from one to the other with no problems.

I consistently go over 2gb a month on mine. But like everyone else has stated, to really use a blackberry, you need a bb plan to give you BIS (Blackberry Internet Service).

Keep in mind that this data is compressed, so you will be using less. When I had 500mb a month, I hardly every topped 200mb a month.

yuusha 10-15-2009 05:24 PM

^ How do you go over 2gb a month? Tethering?

+Kardboard+ 10-15-2009 06:36 PM

I had 4.5GB of usage last month. :lol

Yeah, it was tethering, but even without tethering, streaming vids and music can use a significant amount of data.

Nope. Youtube, streaming podcasts, downloading from audible (2 books a month!), and standard browsing, fb, bbm, etc. Those first few really eat through your data plan.

djalf 10-25-2009 07:15 PM

wow, I rarely go over 100mb a month on my BB plan.

wait so are you saying that my BB data plan would work on my N95 8GB without being charged extra for data?

cause I'm in the process of selling my Bold right now and currently I'm using the N95 but I've disabled all the 3G connections on the phone because I thought they used different data.

SkinnyPupp 10-25-2009 07:18 PM

I've had 3G for a week now, and have used 400MB so far

It will not, from what I've heard. Just call them to confirm.

They're not supposed to allow it...but you can get away with it. As long as you tell them you switch in between there's no reason for them not to allow it.

I've been doing it for a year now...only used a berry for like 2 weeks at the beginning.
