How Do You "Train" Your Dog?

Hey guys,

My aunt and uncle recently bought a mutt mix - I think what looks like a half Welsh Corgi and Chow Chow. They bought her for $100 and didn't really care because they wanted a dog.

It's got a long body which makes me think it's a Welsh Corgi but definitely not a Dacshund. The spotted tongue makes me think it's a Chow Chow but I may be wrong. You can see her slobbering once in a while.

She's a 7 month old pup and left alone 80% of the day. My aunt and uncle go to work and she's left in the back alone. She runs around, plays with her toys, and destroys the garden by digging it up and burying things. She doesn't really "listen" per se. If my aunt and uncle tell her to sit, she doesn't immediately sit. If you ask her to beg or roll over or to shut up, she doesn't understand.

Walking her around the park is a disaster because she gets too excited and ends up walking my aunt and uncle. I don't think she's been introduced to other dogs so she hasn't had any real play time/social time. When she first saw me, she gets super excited and all she wants to do is for me to pet her and won't stop licking me. It's been 5 days and she's still doing this.

In terms of discipline, if my uncle brings out a broom (which she's been whacked with before) she'll go hide. What can we do to discipline/train her to be a good dog?

doggy school, ill ask my sis for the training class number. its on kingsway by joyce i remember that much.

either way, more socializing of the dog is good. gets use to being around other dogs and more owners.

at least you didnt get the "so excited to see you i just pee'd myself" problem.

oh and training isnt hard, really simple, repeat command, reward with treat. do it enough times and they will get it.

Seriously? What if I locked u in the house by yourself, and hit you ? anyways..
when u walk the dog, make sure the dog walks behind u and don't let her walk or run
wherever she wants. She needs to know that you are the owner. Umm shouldn't hit your dog no matter what.. they would just learn to fight back. Treat it like she's a baby, she can't learn things on her own, and you can't expect her to knows everything. If you tell her to sit, stop, shut up for example, you can't expect her to understand what you're talking about, she's a dog not a human. so it takes time. Try training one thing @ a time so it won't confuse her.
o btw: if u hit your dog too much or leave it alone (etc) it can get diseases or get really stress which causes the dog
to start biting themselves. (My brother adopted a dog and his old owner before hit him a lot, so he just bites himself even when he's bleeding. And her went to the vet, and there is NO way to cure except to put the dog to sleep)

So honestly, it seems like your aunt and uncle really don't care about this dog.. so i don't understand why they have one. Might as well give it to someone that will actually love it and treat it like a she's family. She's a dog, not a toy.

^ Ya 19 hrs a day is a bit too much and Im sure that is why she gets so excited around people. They should probably let their puppy sleep in their room just there is still a sense of people around.

Use simple one word comands, hand signals and treats, more than one word tends to confuse dog's. Also posistive reinforcement is the key, prais good behavier and ignore rather than punish bad behavier. Sleeping in the room is ok as long as the dog has a bed or a kennel. The digging is usualy a result of boredom, a dog daycare will help with that as well as socialising. Training is a waste of time and money if you aren't comited so your aunt and uncle need to put forth the effort I've seen lots of people who expect the trainer to teach ther dog every thing this wont work you can't program a dog. I hope this has been helpful.

puppies shouldn't be left alone for that long. puppies are like babies that never grow up.

training requires rewards and corrections. have your aunt/uncle look up some obedience classes, they'll teach you the commands, hand signals, how to walk your dog and it also provides social interactions with other dogs.

I'm assuming when you say 80% of the day, that means the actual day and not night when they go to sleep. That means they spend about 3 hours at home, which by the sounds of it, they probably spend half that time(if even that) actually with the dog, and the other half the dog spends alone in the backyard. That means they spend around 1.5 hours with the dog. I'm sorry, you cannot train a dog to do shit when you spend 1.5 hours with it.
As a dog begins to trust you, he will begin to listen to you and obey you. A dog will not trust you when you leave it in the backyard by itself for 22 hours of the day and spend the other 2 hours hitting it....

This entire situation kind of disgusts me and I'm surprised hardly anyone else is talking about the fact that the dog is in the backyard for 80% of the day by itself....And the guy hits the dog....Honestly, if one is that clueless that he/she hits their dog and one clearly has no time to spend with the dog, why would he/she get one? This is a fucking living thing for god's sake, you're ruining a life!

Wow, perhaps I'm not as sensitive as some of you but the dog was brought home mainly to prevent any sort of intruders. They go to work at 8, come home by 6 and spend as much time as possible with the dog before work at 7am and after they get home from 6 to maybe about 11pm. And no, they don't always hit the dog. It only happened maybe once or twice.

Anyway, thanks for all the replies.

Well, I personally am completely against having a dog for main purpose being to prevent any sort of intruders...That's what door locks and alarm systems are for, no?

Anyway, that's a whole other topic...

BTW, what kind of dog?
