go with the rav4
awd will be nice in the winter. 1.8t sometimes tend to have expensive problems. toyota > vw when it comes to reliability
i suspect the rav4 has more room too for a baby seat.

what exactly are your priorities in choosing these two (baby aside since both will work)? is it price? they are polar opposites and i don't know what kind of opinion to give
for example, if you want performance, then it would be the vw. if it's utility/awd, then obviously the rav4.

How about neither? You want a car that is as new as possible 8k since safety has improved so much the last few years, you can get much newer/safer cars than 97 toyota.

1997 Rav4s are gutless.. They are light vehicles with a high center of gravity.. Not exactly 'safe' in my books.
I love VAG products, but I would have to advise you to stay away from the 1.8T engine on Golf/Jettas that were made between 1999.5-2002. I'm assuming your budget is between $6000-8500.
If you want a safe and reliable vehicle, how about:
-1999-2002 Infiniti G20 (5-star NCAP safety rating-> highest in Europe; has a bulletproof SR20DE engine, Bose system, auto a/c, leather, ass warmers)
-1999 Accord SE/EX 5spd
-Volvo 850 SE (T5 might cost a little more in maintenance stuff)
If you must have AWD:
-2000 Subaru Legacy/Outback
-1997 4cylinder 4Runner (if you can find one!)

Perhaps with a 1997 era Civic.. but not so much with the latest ones since they have more HSS in the crash structure.
But the whole point of the OP is he/she wants to find a car that is safe for the child. My point is to get the latest car possible, with all the safety advances and FEA analysis done.. Yes car get hit might go "boom" but it is about the distribution of force.. not damage mitigation. Quote:

you WANT a jetta turbo
you NEED a Rav4
posted on the internet full of modified cars, so that we can back your reasoning for a turbo car.. hmm
