| Wanting Some First Hand Experience About RX-8
Looking for some advise and suggestions for someone who owned or Owns one currently..
So.. Lately i decided i want to upgrade to an rear wheel drive 200+hp car.. and looked into the FD but thought i'd want to keep the nice interior etc.. im not a full out modding guy.. but like my car to make some nice sound and looks good.. so intake/exhaust/header would be my main engine mods.. on top of that rest of it goes to suspension and etc.. so i looked into the RX-8..
2004 Mazda RX-8 GT 6Speed Fully Loaded
79,000km
been to Alberta/Saskachewan
OEM front lip (but no side skirts?)
Black with Black and Brown Leather Interior
No Accidents (CarProof)
BCAA
Price at $16,490
Here are some of the potential problems that i gathered during test drive..
-cars only at 79,000km but the tranny makes little bit of noise when its in gear and driving.. when i pull it out of gear its nice and quiet.. not sure if its just certain gear
-engine revs smooth.. but known potential flooding issues..
-when trying to put it in 1st gear right after disengage clutch the car makes a really tiny clunk..
I've heard enough bad talk about this car.. but still tons of import guys driving it.. so enough is enough.. I'd like to hear what the other owners have to say about their RX-8 in terms of the actual reliability of it and etc..
thanks!

I've worked for Open Road Mazda and drove a few on the streets and from my limited experience with the car I can say that it is horrible in the snow, a bit twtichy in the rain (although that could be from the tires) and in the 8 months that I was there we had to replace 3 engines because of leaking apex seals and we had at least 2 cars per months for flooding.
Other than that it's a good car especially in the corners

@vexor:: quick question...are you bobby by any chance? if so i bought my rx8 from you LOL
@op:: the 1st gear clunking noise is normal. i got an 08 and it happens once in awhile. the tranny making sounds while it's in gear is definetly not a normal thing.
for the flooding issue as long as you warm your car to the proper operating temperature before shutting it off youll be fine. if you do flood it theres DIY unflooding threads on rx8club.
i'm currently an rx8 owner and i personally feel it's a fantastic car. gives me the luxury i want ie leather seats. And as jeremy clarkson said. It's not the most economical engine nor does it have the most power..you'll have to rev the hell out of it to go zoom zoom. The car is very composed on corners even in stock form and the exhaust note even stock is quite rewarding. I get alot of people bashing about my car too but in the end it's what makes you happy that counts. Hell I still get a grin on my face everytime i drive my car.
only thing i wished is that i got black..

uh is this Chris?
but yes i know about the fuel.. but everything else im considering is sort of the same stuff.. like 250z with 3.5L V6 etc. but i'd rather stick with RX-8 for the fit and finish of it. |

I am on my second RX8.
Re tranny whine....Perhaps the previous owner installed a 'Richard Paul' Axial Flow short shifter. I get a little whine when I rest my hand on the shifter.
Re flooding....just make sure you warm the car up before shutting it off. I flooded it by going out at work and moving to a better parking spot.
I have the Racing Beat cat-back...excellent quality and a very mature sound.

one thing i've always had is the tranny noise.. when im up to speed i can tinkling noise i think coming from right underneath the shifter.. its odd i know.. but i cant seem to get rid of it unless i slow down.. 3rd/4th/5th/6th..
shifts like a dream tho.. hmmmm

Mazda told me to keep the revs low till the car is warmed up, then drive it hard, dont baby it.

spigot hit the nail on the head.
no rotary should ever be babied. even mazda suggests redlining it once in a while to keep carbon deposits to a minimum.

hmm not sure what that could be. I drove a fellow member's rx8 and it had a whirring noise too and he thinks it's due to the clutch bearing or something along the lines of that. It happens if you launch the car too much apparently. Dont quote me on that but you might want to ask your dealer about it and see what can be done.
