Even if there is not snow in the city, winter tires still have benefits. This will surely confuse a lot of ill-informed people.

Winter tires are meant for snow, they don't perform as well in rain, ask me how I know.

Just did a walmart run...car said it's 6 degrees outside.

It really is cold tonight lol

Never once said rain, ask me how I know.

I have Michelin Hydroedges on one car and Nokian WRG2s on the other and, while the Hydros definitely are better in the rain, the WRG2s aren't bad, either (plus miles better in snow).

Both beat the hell out of the Continental ContiProContact LRRs that came w/ the Nissan. I couldn't get those pieces of shit off the car fast enough when winter rolled around.

LOL, I just had this conversation with my wife yesterday. I said I'm raking them all up and dumping them on the neighbors lawn, she used logic and said if I'm going through the trouble of raking them why not just put them in the organics and be a nice neighbor? Dammit I guess she has a point but for fuck sakes........

100th and 156th still has power. Our power grid used to go out all the time about 5 years ago but they really improved it, we barely ever go out any more :)

According to Weather Network, supposed to get warmer again (10 degrees +/-) by next week. Wondering if I should hold off on my snowies until the end of November.

How?

fliptuner 11-13-2014 09:26 AM

Hmmm... almost time to shut off the outside taps.

Can't wait til I hook up water in the garage.

Sure what it felt like. Figured out why to. Daughter loosened the locks on the French doors that go out onto the back patio and it was causing a huge draft and vibrating everything.
I found this out at 1am when the French doors swung open in front of me like a scene out of a horror movie.

Temps are getting below freezing already. Shut those things off.

Winterized the sprinkler system last week just in time for the freezing weather that were getting out this way.

fliptuner 11-13-2014 03:59 PM

Yeah, drained and killed it for the night. Although I'm going to wash the cars tomorrow during the day and do it all over. lol

It's worthwhile to note that this is on a light pickup truck.

We had a good set of winter tires installed, pretty popular brand/model. These tires were incredible in snow, they'd push a front heavy truck up a hill without spinning.

Since money is a concern when it comes to tires, we kept running the winters for a while after the snow stopped falling.
What we discovered is that the truck is scary to drive in the rain with the winter tires installed, at half throttle going up a hill, the rear wheels would not stop spinning. If you let off and got back into the gas, the result would be the same.
This was all on tires that still had excellent tread, they were a maximum of three months old, they would let loose turning in an intersection on a less than drenched road.

I've concluded that winter tires are really only designed to tackle snow, which makes sense, it's why they are called winter tires. They are satisfactory on dry roads, but they seemingly turn into hard plastic when it rains.

Jmac 11-13-2014 10:57 PM

Winter tires use a softer compound than "normal" tires. That's why they grip better on ice.

Not sure why yours would feel like hard plastic in the rain.

Give me a few more weeks of this beautiful fall weather.
